BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team defeated Notre Dame Tuesday night, dropping the Irish by a score of 4-2 at the BGSU Ice Arena. Ryan Peltoma, Dan DeSalvo, Ryan Carpenter and Bryce Williamson scored for the Falcons, while goaltender Andrew Hammond (5-7-3) stopped 20-of-22 shots in the win.
The Falcons were held scoreless on the power play in the game, going 0-for-6 with the man advantage. Notre Dame did manage to cash in on the power play, going 1-for-4 on the night.
The Fighting Irish scored the first goal of the contest, coming off the stick of Brian Rust with 3:16 left in the opening period. Rust's tip on a shot from T.J. Tynan marked his sixth goal of the season, giving Notre Dame the 1-0 lead.
With just under seven minutes remaining in the second period, the Falcons answered back, tying the contest 1-1. Rusty Hafner collected the puck in the Falcons' end, before feeding Carpenter flying through the neutral zone. Carpenter skated into the Notre Dame end, drawing the Irish defense down near the far hash mark. Carpenter stopped and sent a pass back across the zone, finding Peltoma for a one-timer just inside the blue line. His shot flew past Notre Dame netminder Mike Johnson, giving Peltoma his first goal of the season.
Bowling Green followed up with a second goal in the frame, coming just 1:20 later at the 14:23 mark of the second period. Ben Murphy and Adam Berkle battled for the puck at the bottom of the Notre Dame zone, taking possession at the left of the Irish net. Murphy took a check on the play, dropping him to the ice. From his knees, Murphy fired a pass to the middle of the zone, finding DeSalvo for a one-time shot in the slot. DeSalvo's blast once again beat Johnson, giving the Falcons a 2-1 lead.
The Orange and Brown continued to pour on the offense in the third period, scoring a third-straight goal at 12:19 of the final frame. The Falcons rushed into the Notre Dame zone, with the puck eventually finding its way to Carpenter at the top of the circle. Carpenter fired a shot on the Notre Dame cage, surprising Johnson on the play. Johnson made the initial save, kicking a huge rebound back towards the slot. Carpenter swooped in and fired the puck back at Johnson, beating him for his team-leading eighth goal of the season, and a 3-1 Falcon lead.
With just under three minutes remaining in the third period, the Irish worked the puck around Bowling Green's zone on the power play, eventually finding Tynan at the top of the near circle for a slap shot. Tynan's shot beat Hammond, cutting the Bowling Green lead to 3-2.
Just 35 seconds later, Notre Dame coughed up the puck at center ice, giving Williamson room to enter the Irish zone. Williamson darted towards the Notre Dame cage, beating Johnson five hole for his seventh goal of the season.
Williamson's late tally proved to be too much for Notre Dame to overcome, as the Falcons held on to beat the Fighting Irish by a final score of 4-2.
Bowling Green's third win in a row pushes the Falcons' overall record to 7-10-5, with a record of 4-7-3-1 in the conference. Notre Dame's record drops to 15-7-0 overall, including a record of 11-3-0 in the CCHA.
The Falcons hit the ice again this Friday, as they welcome No. 10 Western Michigan to the BGSU ice Arena in the first half of their home-and-home series. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m.
