Falcons Dominate Michigan, 5-1

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team defeated the University of Michigan Tuesday night, dropping the Wolverines by a score of 5-1. Junior Bryce Williamson led the Orange and Brown with two goals, combining with tallies from Marc Rodriguez, Ryan Carpenter and Adam Berkle for a season best five-goal output. Senior goaltender Andrew Hammond (4-7-3) allowed one goal in the win, turning away 19-of-20 shots. Both teams were scoreless on the power play, with the Falcons and Wolverines each going 0-for-4 on the night.
Bowling Green scored the first goal of the contest, silencing the rowdy Yost Ice Arena crowd with an even-strength tally at 6:10 of the first period. Sophomore Marcus Perrier started the play, firing a shot on the Wolverine cage from the point. Michigan netminder Adam Janecyk made the save, pushing a rebound out into the near circle. Junior Cam Wojtala collected the puck, before turning and firing a shot back on net. Williamson tipped Wojtala's shot from the hash mark, beating Janecyk for a 1-0 Bowling Green lead.
The Falcons continued to pressure the Wolverines, scoring a second goal just 1:40 later to take an early 2-0 lead. Junior Andrew Wallace collected a pass off the glass from the Falcons' zone, before moving in on an odd-man break towards the Michigan net. Wallace slid a pass across the slot to the trailing Rodriguez, giving him plenty of time to fire a shot through Janecyk's five hole for his second goal in as many games.
The Wolverines finally got on the board just over three minutes into the second period, netting an even-strength tally from Luke Moffat to cut Bowling Green's lead to 2-1.
The Orange and Brown answered back with two more goals in the middle frame, increasing the Falcons' lead to 4-1 at the second intermission. Carpenter scored the first Falcon goal of the middle stanza, poking home a rebound on a shot from Dajon Mingo for his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Berkle scored the fourth Bowling Green goal of the contest, deflecting in a shot from sophomore Mike Sullivan at 14:27 of the second period.
Williamson scored Bowling Green's final tally of the night, netting his second goal of the contest at 11:51 of the third to secure the 5-1 victory for the Falcons.
Bowling Green moves to 6-10-5 overall, with a record of 3-7-3-1 in CCHA action. Michigan's overall record drops to 7-11-2, with a record of 4-8-2-2 in conference play. The win gives the Falcons 13 points in the conference, tying Michigan State for ninth in the standings.
Williamson's two tallies in the contest mark the first time this season that a Falcon has scored multiple goals in a game. Bowling Green's last player to record multiple goals in a game was Dan DeSalvo back on March 11, 2012 when he scored a hat trick against Ferris State in a 4-3 OT win.
Bowling Green's five- goal output marks the first time the Falcons have scored more than three goals in a game this season. The Orange and Brown's last five-goal game came back on March 3, 2012 in a 5-3 win against Northern Michigan.
Mingo's assist on the third Falcon goal stretches his current point streak to a career-high five games, dating back to the Falcons' 1-4 loss to Notre Dame on Dec. 15. Carpenter's two-point night also pushed his point streak to five games, tying a personal best. Carpenter's multi-point game is his second of the season, the first coming back on Oct. 12, a 3-5 loss to Union at the BGSU Ice Arena. In total, the Falcons recorded 15 points in the contest, their most in 2012-13.
