About Ohio State
The Ohio State Buckeyes men's ice hockey team is a NCAA Division I college ice hockey program. The Buckeyes are a member of the Big 10 Conference, and play at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes ice hockey program began in 1963 and played in the CCHA from 1971-2013. Ohio State has joined Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Penn State to form a six-team Big Ten Hockey Conference.
The Last Time
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team tied Ohio State, 3-3, on October 27, 2012, eventually defeating the Buckeyes in a CCHA shootout. Rusty Hafner, Mark Cooper and Brett Mohler scored in regulation, while freshman Tommy Burke stopped 21-of-24 shots
All-TimeÂ
The Falcons and Buckeyes have met a total of 156 times since dating back to 1969. Overall, BGSU leads the series 89-59-8. Bowling Green also has three shootout victories over that time.
All-Time Series First and Last Meetings
The two teams played each on December 5, 1969, marking the first time the two teams went toe-to-toe in the rink. Ohio State came out victorious in their first meeting, beating the Falcons 6-3. The last time the two teams played was October 27, 2012, when the Falcons hosted the Buckeyes at the BGSU Arena, ending up in a 3-3 deadlock.
Unfamiliar Scene
For the first time in 43 years, Ohio State and Bowling Green will play against each other that will not count towards their conference records. The reasoning? Bowling Green has moved to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), joining six new teams to form a league that features 10 teams. Meanwhile, Ohio State has joined five other Big Ten Conference foes to form a six-team conference in the Big Ten.
The First Game
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team began their 2013-14 regular season on Friday night (Oct. 11), skating to a 3-3 overtime tie with No. 16 Union College. Playing in front of 1,921 Dutchmen fans at Messa Rink in Schenectady, N.Y., the Falcons (0-0-1) saw three different players score goals, while sophomore Tommy Burke logged all 65 minutes in the net.
The Last Game
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost to the 16th-ranked Union College on Saturday night (Oct.12), dropping a 5-2 decision to the Dutchmen in the second game of the road series. Playing in front of 2,198 Dutchmen fans at Messa Rink in Schenectady, N.Y., the Falcons (0-1-1) saw freshman Matt Pohlkamp and sophomore forward Mark Cooper score goals, while freshman goaltender Tomas Sholl stopped 24-of-29 shots in his first collegiate start.
Unusual Identical Start
Prior to the Falcons' 2012 opener against Niagara, Bowling Green never tied an opponent on opening day. The 2-2 tie against the Purple Eagles marked the first time in history a tie occurred in 44 opening day games, going 23-20-1 over that time. However, with a 3-3 tie against No. 16 Union College on Friday night (Oct. 11), BGSU has now tied an opponent two consecutive years, something that has never happened in Falcon history.
On The Plus Side Of Things
Eight Falcons' finished with a plus rating on the ice over the weekend, with freshman Sean Walker leading the way with a +3 rating. Defenseman Marcus Perrier finished with a +2 rating on the ice, while six others finished with a +1 rating on the ice. Last year, only three Falcons' finished on the plus side, doubling the number of players to do so this year. Â
Cooper Action
Sophomore forward Mark Cooper did his best to stay involved over the first two games of the 2013-14 season. In the Falcons season opener, Cooper had the first helper in freshman Pierre-Luc Mercier goal in the second period, which at the time, tied the game at 2-2. Cooper also scored his first goal of the season in the second game of the series. Cooper now has 18 points in his career (10-8).
Quick Fact
In BGSU history, the Falcons are an impressive 18-7 in home openers, marking this the 26th home opener in Falcon history.
Home Sweet Home
Bowling Green will return home this week to play three straight games at the BGSU Ice Arena, and five of their next six games. The only road trip during that time will be to Columbus, Ohio on Oct. 29, marking their shortest road trip of the season. This will be the second most home games played on their home ice in such a timetable all season.
Week 2 (2012-13)
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost to Union College, falling to the Dutchmen by a score of 4-1. Sophomore Dajon Mingo scored the lone goal for the Falcons, while senior Andrew Hammond stopped 26-of-30 shots in the loss. The Falcons lost both games to Union College at the BGSU Ice Arena in 2012, dropping their record to 0-2-1 at the time.
Going Streaking Early
Sophomore forward Mark Cooper had a point in the first two games of the season (one goal, one assist). Cooper was the only player over the weekend to record a point in both games.
Freshman Impact
All five freshman saw action on the ice over the weekend against No. 16 Union, as each earned their first collegiate points of their careers. Defenseman Sean Walker had the biggest impact, finishing the weekend with a +3 rating in the rink, while handing out an assist over the two days. Pierre-Luc Mercier scored his first goal of his career, forwards Kevin Dufour (assist) and Matt Pohlkamp (goal) also secured their first points in their career.
More Freshman
Freshman Goaltender Tomas Sholl made his first start in the net in the second road game of the series. Sholl stopped 24-of-29 shots.
Upperclassmen Impact
Senior captain Camden Wojtala and junior defenseman Mike Sullivan each recorded their first assists of the 2013-14 season in the second game against Union College. Both Wojtala and Sullivan helped Mark Cooper score his first goal of the season, giving the Falcons their second goal of the game.
Chasing 60
With the assist over the weekend, Cam Wojtala now has 56 career points (23-33), second to only Ryan Carpenter with the most points on the current roster (63).
Preseason Lovin'
The WCHA release its preseason coaches/media poll last week, picking the Falcons to finish fourth in both polls. The Orange and Brown received 58 total points, trailing Minnesota State (85), Ferris State (65) and Michigan Tech (64). It's the highest preseason ranking Bowling Green has received in the past 12 seasons.
