Colgate Play Against The WCHA
The Raiders will travel to Bowling Green, Ohio to take on the Falcons in a two-game series over the weekend (Oct. 18-19). It will mark the second team that Colgate will play over the first two weeks that are now part of the newly formed WCHA. The Raiders played WCHA foe Ferris State over their first weekend of action, splitting the two-game series.
The Last Time
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost to Colgate on Oct. 12, 2012, dropping a 4-2 decision to the Raiders in the second game of the road series. Freshman Mark Cooper and Sophomore Ryan Carpenter scored for the Falcons, while freshman Tommy Burke stopped 23-of-27 shots in his first career start.
All-Time Series
Bowling Green and Colgate University have meet a total of eight times, dating back to January 18, 1974. The Falcons hold a 6-1-1 record all-time against the Raiders, with their only loss coming last year when Colgate defeated the Orange and Brown, 4-2.
The First Game
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team began their 2013-14 regular season on Friday night (Oct. 11), skating to a 3-3 overtime tie with No. 16 Union College. Playing in front of 1,921 Dutchmen fans at Messa Rink in Schenectady, N.Y., the Falcons (0-0-1) saw three different players score goals, while sophomore Tommy Burke logged all 65 minutes in the net.
The Last Game
Four unanswered goals propelled the Bowling Green State University ice hockey team's comeback over the Ohio State Buckeyes on Tuesday night (Oct. 15), defeating the Scarlet and Gray 4-3. Playing in front of 2,752 Falcon faithful at the BGSU Ice Arena, the Falcons (1-1-1) saw three different players score goals, while sophomore Tommy Burke turned away 25-of-28 shots throughout the night.
Fun Fact
With the Falcons victory over Ohio State on Tuesday night (Oct. 15), it marked the first time since 2008 that Bowling Green chalked up a win over the Scarlet and Gray. In their previous 16 meetings the Buckeyes held a 12-1-3 record.
Unusual Identical Start
Prior to the Falcons 2012 opener against Niagara, Bowling Green never tied an opponent on opening day. The 2-2 tie against the Purple Eagles marked the first time in history a tie occurred in 44 opening day games, going 23-20-1 over that time. However, with a 3-3 tie against No. 16 Union College on Friday night (Oct. 11), BGSU has now tied an opponent two consecutive years, something that has never happened in Falcon history.
Falcon Points
Senior forward Bryce Williamson and sophomore forward Ben Murphy lead a group of seven goal scorers with two each through three games. Overall Bowling Green has 10 skaters with at least one point, with all of them playing in every game.
Sophomore Attack
In what was head coach Chris Bergeron's largest recruiting class a year ago, the now sophomores are leading the Falcons with three goals, four assists and seven points on the season. That is good for over 30 percent in each category on the young season.
Burke With The Win
Sophomore goaltender Tommy Burke earned his first victory of the 2013-14 season against Ohio State. Burke stopped 25-of-28 shots, and held the Buckeyes to a scoreless third period. With the win, Burke has improved his overall record to 6-6-3 in his career. Burke has played in 18 career games, posting a .889 save percentage and 336 saves.
Senior Contribution
Forward Bryce Williamson has stepped up his play in the first three games of the 2013-14 season. Williamson has scored two goals in the first three games, and adding an assist against Ohio State for three total points on the year. Williamson is the only Falcon to record a multi-point game so far. Senior captain Camden Wojtala also added his first assist in the second game of the road series against Union College. The assist gave Wojtala 56 total career points in 123 games.
Buckling Down
One of the top priorities entering the season for coach Bergeron was to improve special team play. Bowling Green went an impressive 7-for-8 on the penalty kill (88%) on Tuesday night. It was a much better effort after allowing 18 power play opportunities in which the Dutchmen capitalized on six of them last week.
New High
Sophomore forward Ben Murphy scored two goals against Ohio State; helping the Falcons score four unanswered goals to beat the Buckeyes 4-3 at the BGSU Ice Arena. The two goals set a new career high for goals in a game in his career.
On The Plus Side Of Things
Four Falcons finished with plus rating on the ice against Ohio State, giving Bowling Green eight skaters with at least a +1 rating on the season. Freshman defenseman Sean Walker leads the way with a +4 rating with Jose Delgadillo, Adam Berkle and Marcus Perrier follow with a +2 rating.
Week 2 (2012-13)
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost to Union College, falling to the Dutchmen by a score of 4-1. Sophomore Dajon Mingo scored the lone goal for the Falcons, while senior Andrew Hammond stopped 26-of-30 shots in the loss. The Falcons lost both games to Union College at the BGSU Ice Arena in 2012, dropping their record to 0-2-1 at the time.
Freshmen Impact
All five freshmen saw action on the ice over the weekend against No. 16 Union, as each earned their first collegiate points of their careers. Defenseman Sean Walker had the biggest impact, finishing the weekend with a +3 rating in the rink, while handing out an assist over the two days. Pierre-Luc Mercier scored his first goal of his career, forwards Kevin Dufour (assist) and Matt Pohlkamp (goal) also secured their first points in their career.
Chasing 60
With the assist over the weekend, Cam Wojtala now has 56 career points (23-33), second to only Ryan Carpenter with the most points on the current roster (63).
Preseason Lovin'
The WCHA release its preseason coaches/media poll last week, picking the Falcons to finish fourth in both polls. The Orange and Brown received 58 total points, trailing Minnesota State (85), Ferris State (65) and Michigan Tech (64). It's the highest preseason ranking Bowling Green has received in the past 12 seasons.
