WINTER HAVEN, Fla.—The Bowling Green State University baseball team closed out their annual spring break trip on Saturday morning, losing to North Dakota State University 8-5. The two teams combined for 22 hits on the afternoon. With the loss, the Falcons now stand at 3-9 on the season.
Redshirt junior Mike Frank would shut the Bison down over the first three innings, allowing the Falcons to strike first in the bottom of the third.
Brandon Howard began the bottom of the third reaching base on an error. Following a Jesse Rait sacrifice bunt, Patrick Lancaster would single through the infield to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
NDSU would tie the game in the top of the fourth with an unearned run of their own.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Falcons would get four runs on six hits to take a 5-1 lead midway through the contest.
Following two strikeouts with two runners on in the fifth, Howard would double down the right field line to score a run and put two Falcons in scoring position. Rait would single to score two runners, advancing to second on the throw home. Lancaster and Jake Thomas followed with singles to put the Falcons up 5-1.
The Falcons would get just one hit over the final five innings of play, leaving the door open for North Dakota State to mount a comeback.
NDSU would score an unearned run in the top of the sixth, as well. BGSU led 5-2 after six.
In the seventh, NDSU would take the lead for good, scoring four runs on four hits. The first two batters would reach before a fly out for the first out of the inning. After a wild pitch, the Bison had two runners in scoring position with one out. Frank would allow a single before he handed the ball off to Ethan McKenney with two on and one out.
The first batter McKenney faced grounded out to second, on a ball hit too softly to turn the inning-ending double play. That would come back to hurt the Falcons, as the next two batters got hits to put the Bison on top 6-5.
Bison starter John Straka would have a strong finish to his outing on Saturday, retiring the final 12 Bowling Green batters in the game. Straka went the distance to improve to 3-0 on the year, striking out eight and allowing nine hits.
North Dakota State would add two, unearned, insurance runs in the top of the ninth off senior Nick Bruns.
The Falcons will now return home for their home opener on Wednesday afternoon at Warren E. Steller Field. The first pitch between Bowling Green and Malone is set for 3 p.m.
