Box Score
TOLEDO, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University baseball team exploded for season-highs in hits and runs on Saturday afternoon, defeating Toledo by a final score of 14-1. The Mid-American Conference game was played at UT's Scott Park.
The game looked like it would be a pitcher's duel through much of the first four innings, as sleet and rain fell from the sky. In the fifth, however, the Falcons would score six runs, breaking open a 2-0 game
The Falcons recorded all 18 hits after the second inning on Saturday, as Andrew Kubuski extended his on-base streak to 18 games in the third inning, recording Bowling Green's first hit of the day. Kubuski would eventually come around to score on a Patrick Lancaster infield single in the inning.
In the top of the fourth, senior Matt Pitzulo would lead off with a double, advancing to third on a wild pitch. At the conclusion of a hard-fought, nine-pitch at bat, Brandon Howard would drive Pitzulo in to put the Falcons on top 2-0.
Two runs would be all that Falcon starter Mike Frank would need on Saturday, as he surrendered just one run over eight strong innings. Frank struck out two batters in the game, picking up his second victory of the season.
The game would turn in the top of the fifth, when the Falcons broke out to the tune of six runs on six hits. Lancaster led off the inning with a bunt single, advancing to third on a single by Jeremy Shay.
The next batter, Jesse Rait, would reach base on a throwing error by Toledo. Rait was initially ruled out by the first base umpire, but when Danny Schmitz asked him to appeal to the home plate umpire, the call was overturned. The home plate umpire had a better view of the first baseman's foot pulled off the base.
Following that play, Toledo would make another error, on a ground ball hit by Pitzulo. With runners on the corner and nobody out, Pitzulo hit a sharp grounder to third. Shay was caught off the base, but the throw home sailed well over the catcher's head, allowing Shay to walk home for a 4-0 lead.
With two outs in the inning, freshman Nick Glanzman would hit a bullet back up the middle to score two more runs. Glanzman would steal his second base of the day to move into scoring position, and Kubuski would follow with a single to increase the lead to 7-0.
T.J. Losby would join the party with an RBI single to left centerfield. On that play, Kubuski would score all the way from first when the three Toledo defenders converged and failed to pick up the ball in time to hold Kubuski at third.
The Falcons would add two more runs in the top of the seventh, on RBIs from Kubuski and Losby.
In the eighth, the Falcons would record their 15th hit of the day, setting the new season standard (previously 14) on a Brian Bien single up the middle.
The Orange and Brown would assure that Toledo had no thoughts of a comeback in the ninth inning, scoring four runs on three hits. The big hit of the inning was a pinch-hit, two-run home run to right field by Logan Walker.
Ben Singer would pitch the ninth, retiring the Rockets to finish off the lopsided victory.
The Falcons improve to 10-19 (5-6 MAC) on the season with the win, claiming the series victory over the Rockets. Bowling Green will go for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch coming at 1 p.m.
