BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University baseball team scored a season-high ten runs in a 10-4 win over Eastern Michigan on Friday afternoon. The game was played at Warren E. Steller Field. With the victory, the Falcons improve to 7-17 (3-4 MAC) overall. Eastern Michigan falls to 12-16 (2-5 MAC) with the loss.
Eastern Michigan got on the scoreboard in the top of the first, thanks to a sacrifice fly from Sam Ott which scored Daniel Russell. Russell had reached on a leadoff error by the Falcons, making the run unearned.
The run in the top of the first would be the only one that Cody Apthorpe would surrender in his seven innings of work. Picking up the win to improve his record to 2-2 on the season, Apthorpe has not allowed an earned run in either of his last two starts.
The Falcons would take the lead for good in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of a few EMU errors to score four runs. Patrick Lancaster would work a two-out walk to begin the rally, eventually coming around to score on an Eagle error.
Apthorpe kept the Eagles out of the hit column during the first three innings, allowing the Falcons to increase the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. The Orange and Brown would start the inning with four straight hits, as T.J. Losby, Matt Pitzulo, and Jeremy Shay scored in the inning.
In the fifth, the Falcons would add two more runs, increasing their lead to 9-1.Shay would lead off the inning with a single, before scoring on a Jake Thomas triple into the right field corner. Thomas would score later in the inning on a balk by EMU pitcher Michael Marsinek.
Apthorpe would work out of a jam in the top of the seventh, as he faced a bases-loaded, two-out jam with the top of the Eagles' order coming to bat. However, Apthorpe would get Russell to fly out to center, stranding the bases loaded and keeping the lead at 9-1.
The Falcons would crack double-digits for the first time all season with a single run in the bottom of the seventh, started again by the junior duo of Shay and Thomas. Combined on the afternoon, that duo went 7-for-10 with five RBI and five runs scored. Freshman Nick Glanzman's first career RBI—coming on a groundout—would increase the Bowling Green lead to 10-1 after seven innings.
EMU added two unearned runs in the top of the eighth, before adding their final run in the top of the ninth. Both teams committed five errors in the game, leading to seven unearned runs being scored.
The Falcons and Eagles will continue their series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is expected at 1 p.m., with Mike Frank (BGSU) opposing Brian Hill (EMU) on the mound.
