Falcons Win In Walk Off Fashion

BGSU comes from behind to defeat Miami 5-4

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University baseball team had not won a game in 2013 when trailing after seven innings, but they broke that streak today with a come-from-behind, walk-off win. Trailing 4-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Falcons would get an RBI double from Jeremy Shay to score T.J. Losby and tie the game. Following a groundout which would advance Shay to third, pinch-hitter Logan Walker would deliver with a walk-off single to right-center field. The Falcons would mob Walker out by second base, as they moved to within one game of visiting Miami University in the Mid-American Conference standings. The Falcons are now 15-23 (9-10 MAC) on the year, while Miami drops to 21-24 (10-9 MAC) overall.
The Orange and Brown would break into the run column first on Friday afternoon, when a Matt Pitzulo RBI groundout scored Shay from third base. Shay had led off the fourth with the first of his two doubles on the afternoon.
The RedHawks would respond in the top of the fifth inning, recording back-to-back doubles with two outs. The first would come off the bat of Miami's leading hitter, Jake Romano. Romano would then score on a double by John Crummy.
The game would remain 3-1 until the bottom of the seventh inning. After the first two runners had reached base in the inning, Brian Bien would beat out a potential double play ball to the second baseman. With runners on the corners, Andrew Kubuski would single up the middle to score Brandon Howard and get the Falcons back to within 3-2. With two on and just one out, Miami would turn to the bullpen. With an 0-2 count to Losby, new MU pitcher Cory Klenke would lose control of a breaking ball and hit Losby. With the bases loaded, the Falcons would miss a golden opportunity to tie the game—striking out and fouling out to end the frame.
Although it was just a one run game, it would have been easy for the Falcons to hang their heads after stranding three runners—including the tying run—on base. But, captain Cody Apthorpe would pick his teammates up, breezing through the top of the eighth in one-two-three fashion. Apthorpe lasted eight strong innings on Friday afternoon, recording a no-decision.
Pitzulo's one out single would set the tone for the Orange and Brown in the bottom of the eighth. Redshirt junior Fred Sharp would come in to run for Pitzulo. Sharp would advance to second on a walk to Howard. For the second straight inning, the Falcons would load the bases following a pinch-hit walk to Jake Thomas.
After another Miami pitching change, Bien would bloop a pitch over the second baseman's head. Having to hold up on the ball in the air, the RedHawks would retire Thomas at second base. However, Bien's RBI fielder's choice would be enough to tie the game.
Senior Nick Bruns would relieve Apthorpe in the top of the ninth. After getting two quick outs, the top of the Miami order would get the Bruns for three straight singles, taking a 4-3 lead in the process.
With the heart of the Falcons' order coming up, the Falcons knew they would just need a base runner to give themselves a chance. Losby would jump on the first pitch he saw from MU reliever Ryan Powers, driving a double into the left-center field gap. Patrick Lancaster would advance Losby to third on a 1-4-3 groundout. Lancaster was ruled out on the bang-bang call at first base.
Shay, the cleanup hitter, would record his second double of the game, this time to right-center field. Losby would score on the play to tie the game at four. Following a long battle between Powers and Jesse Rait, the Falcon sophomore would move Shay to third on a groundout to short.
Walker, the pinch-hitter, wouldn't wait around to see a strike. Jumping on the very first pitch of the at-bat, he drove one into right-center field to score Shay and provide the Falcons with the walk-off heroics.
The two teams will be back at it tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch expected at 1 p.m. Mike Frank will take the ball for head coach Danny Schmitz, as the Falcons look to take the series.
