Falcons' Season Comes To End In NCAA Tournament

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Two weeks ago, the Bowling Green State University baseball team was two outs away from not qualifying for the Mid-American Conference Tournament. Today, their season came to a close following a 7-3 loss to Oklahoma State in the NCAA Tournament's Louisville Regional. The Falcons, who were the only sub-.500 team in the NCAA Tournament field of 64, finished the 2013 campaign at 24-31 overall.
Oklahoma State got on the board early on in Saturday's game, taking advantage of three two-out walks and a single to score a run in the first.
The Falcons would begin the game with a single by Brian Bien, but would strand him at second in the frame. Bien was 3-for-5 on Saturday, getting on base six times during the two Regional games.
In the second inning, the Cowboys would get three hits, a hit by pitch, and a walk to score three runs and knock Falcon starter Cody Apthorpe out of the game.
Ben Singer would enter the game with a runner on first and just one out in the second, the Falcons already trailing 4-1. Singer would proceed to induce a double-play ground ball to get the Falcons out of the inning. Singer would pitch a season-high 4.1 innings on Saturday, allowing just two hits and no runs.
The Falcons would get on the board in the bottom of the second inning, closing the deficit to 4-1. After an out was recorded to begin the inning, Logan Walker would get on base with a hit by pitch. Brandon Howard would single through the right side to put the Falcons in business. Andrew Kubuski would have to leave the game after fouling a pitch off his ankle, and pinch hitter Jake Thomas would move the runners both into scoring position with a groundout. OSU starter Tyler Nurdin would deliver a wild pitch to the next batter, and Walker would scamper home to put the Falcons on the board.
With Singer and Nurdin dueling it out on the mound, neither team would score again until the seventh inning.
Senior Nick Bruns would come into the game for the final three innings. Oklahoma State would add two runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth to increase the lead to 7-1.
The Falcons had their best chance for a comeback in the bottom of the eighth. Patrick Lancaster would begin the inning with a single down the left field line. After Jeremy Shay walked, T.J. Losby would single to score Lancaster and cut the deficit to 7-2.
Jesse Rait would hit a ground ball in the hole to shortstop, but the throw would carry past the second baseman and allow a run to score and both Losby and Rait to advance a base.
Following two straight strikeouts and a hit by pitch, the Falcons would send the tying run, and pinch-hitter Matt Pitzulo to the plate. The senior would fight in his at bat, but would eventually fly out to deep left field on a 3-2 count to end the Falcons' threat.
Neither Oklahoma State or BGSU would score in the ninth, and the game would end with a final score of 7-3. Bowling Green's season comes to a close with a 24-31 record. Bruns, Pitzulo, Fred Sharp, and Drew Kuns are the only four seniors that the Falcons will lose off this year's squad which returned Bowling Green to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999.

*With his appearance on Saturday, Nick Bruns tied the school record for career appearances with 91. Bruns tied fellow Saint Henry native, and high school coach, Neil Schmitz (2001-04) for the record. Bruns also set a school record with 29 appearances in 2013. Bruns finished his career second all-time with 15 saves.
*Ethan McKenney finished the season with a 1.99 ERA, 12th all-time for a single season. McKenney is the first player since Andy Smith in 1997 to appear on the list.
*The Falcon pitching staff finished the season with a 3.83 ERA. 2013 marked the first time since 1996 that the Falcons' pitching staff ended the campaign with an ERA lower than 4.50. The Falcons' pitching staff also set a school record with 479.1 innings pitched. The previous school record was 479.0.
*Mike Frank finished the season with 102.1 innings pitched, second in school history for a single season. Frank also finished with 80 strikeouts, tied for seventh all-time for a single season.
*Cody Apthorpe finished with 88.2 innings pitched in 2013, tied for eighth all-time.
*The last time that two pitchers both appeared in the top ten for innings pitched in a single season was 1999, also the last time the Falcons made the NCAA Tournament. Apthorpe (T-8th) and Frank (2nd) both appear on that list following their 2013 campaigns.
*T.J. Losby (211) and Patrick Lancaster (213) both finished in the top ten for at bats in a single season.
