About Lake Superior State
The Lake Superior State men's ice hockey program began in 1966 as a member in the NAIA, and eventually joined the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Over the past three seasons, Roque has lead the Lakers to home ice advantage in the first round of the CCHA playoffs and has compiled a 32-20-8 record at the Taffy Abel Arena.

At the BGSU Ice Arena (5000), Bowling Green (12-9-5, 9-6-3 WCHA) returns to action after a week off as the Falcons play host to Lake Superior State (11-12-1, 7-9-0 WCHA) at 7:07 pm ET on both Friday and Saturday nights. Lake Superior is within a game of the .500 mark on the road this season at 5-6-1 overall.
WCHA In The Polls
One team remains in the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) National Poll after last weekend's play. Ferris State, who entered last weekend ranked second in the nation, dropped two games to Minnesota State University, dropping the Bulldogs down to sixth with a 17-5-3 overall record. Lake Superior State University dropped out of the top 20 by losing a pair on non-conference games to Notre Dame, and now sits 11-12-1 overall on the year. Minnesota State, who was the preseason coaches' poll favorite, also received votes (29) in the latest poll, while Bowling Green received seven votes. Â
Home Sweet Home
The Falcons are in the midst of a six-game home stand, which is the longest stretch of the 2013-14 season. Bowling Green has seen success at the BGSU Ice Arena this season, owning a 7-2-2 record. In 11 home games this season, the Orange and Brown have averaged 3.18 goals per game, while allowing only 1.45 goals per game to their opponents -- a +1.73 goal differential playing on their home ice.
Recent WCHA Success
The Falcons have seen success over their last six games in the WCHA, owning a six-game unbeaten streak at 4-0-2 during the stretch. Bowling Green took 10 conference points, propelling them in sole possession of third place with 21 points in the league. The Falcons have out-scored their opponents 22-8 during the stretch, averaging 3.6 goals per game over the last six games. Overall, the Orange and Brown are second in the WCHA in scoring offense, averaging 3.04 goals per game.
Bowling Green Versus The Rest
After going 1-0-1 against Alaska (Jan. 10-11), the Falcons improved to 11-3-3 against non-ranked opponents this season, averaging 3.47 goals and only allowing an average of 1.76 GPG. Bowling Green have played nine games against a ranked opponent so far this season, coming away with a 1-6-2 record. All nine games have been on the road or on neutral ice, as the Falcons averaged 2.22 goals per game, while allowing 3.55 goals to nationally ranked opponents.
Falcons Leading The WCHA
The Falcons have three players at the top of the WCHA in scoring for the season thus far. Junior Dan DeSalvo leads the league with 18 assists, while sophomore defenseman Ralfs Freibergs is right behind with 16 assists. Junior forward Adam Berkle also leads the WCHA with the most short-handed goals, tallying three on the year. Overall, the Orange and Brown have at least one player in the top five overall in seven different scoring categories in the WCHA this season.
Point Streak Snapped
Dan DeSalvo failed to tally one point last Saturday against Alaska (Jan.11), snapping his four-game point streak over the past several weeks. During that time, DeSalvo tallied 2-7=9 in those four games, giving him 24 total points on the year. DeSalvo's 18 assists are two short of tying his career-best 20 helpers in a single season that was set in the 2012-13 season. He is also one point shy of tying his career-best single season mark of 25 overall points set last season
Burke's House
Goaltender Tommy Burke (Chaska, MN) got the call to start in the pipes in both games versus Alaska on Jan. 10-11, stopping 47-of-48 shots on goal for a .979 series save percentage, posting five shutout periods in regulation, while saving all three shots faced in the sudden death overtime on Saturday. The netminder also blanked the visiting Nanooks on all eight power-play chances, helping the Falcons take three out of four weekend points to propel Bowling Green in sole possession of second place in the WCHA at the time. Burke, who ranks second in the WCHA and 21st nationally with a 2.07 goals-against average over 986:57 minutes of action, has remained unbeaten at home with a 5-0-2 record at the BGSU Ice Arena. Overall, Burke is 9-2-4 in 15 appearances and owns three shutouts. He is also third in the league with a .924 save percentage.
Nailing Down The Ice
Junior defenseman Rusty Hafner (Toledo, OH) posted on assist on Jan. 10 and added another helper on Jan. 11, bumping his point streak to three games. Hafner is currently the only Falcon with a point streak, tallying 1-3=4 in three games from Jan. 4-11. His weekend plus/minus versus Alaska (Jan. 10-11) of +2 gives him an overall plus-14 on-ice rating, which is the best on the team and in the WCHA.
Carpenter's Return
Junior captain Ryan Carpenter made his season debut against Alaska (Jan. 10-11). Carpenter, who led the Falcons with 33 points a season ago, tallied his first point of the 2013-14 season with a goal in that Friday night's 3-0 win over the Nanooks. Carpenter played both games at right wing over the weekend series, after playing center for the majority of the 2012-13 season.
Month of December
The hockey team ended the month of December with an overall record of 3-2-1, improving from a 2-1-1 mark a year ago. Overall, Bowling Green has improved their win total in each month this season compared to last, and has four more wins entering January.
