Falcons score twice in the third period to earn a series split.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team defeated No. 12 Minnesota State, 3-1, Saturday night (Nov. 1) at the BGSU Ice Arena in front of 2,337 fans. The Falcons received goals from Brett D'Andrea, Tyler Spezia and Kevin Dufour, while goaltender Tommy Burke turned away 26-of-27 shots.
Spezia's fourth goal of the season – which was scored at the 7:32 mark of the third period – was his fourth of the year, and broke a 1-1 tie. D'Andrea's tally was the first of his career, and Dufour's was his ninth of the season.
The win moves Bowling Green to 5-2-1 (3-1-0 WCHA), and drops Minnesota State to 5-3-0 (3-1-0).
"We got off to a good start again, but we were able to sustain it. We won more puck battles, and we had more offensive zone time," said head coach Chris Bergeron. "We want to be an intense group that has poise and focus all of the time. Last night, we weren't that. Tonight, we were."
The Falcons played from in front, as D'Andrea's goal at the 11:27 mark of the first period was the only goal scored in the frame. After working the puck around the Maverick zone, Sean Walker gained possession of the puck at the blue line. Walker then slid it across to his defensive partner, Mike Sullivan, who fired a shot from the point that was redirected by D'Andrea into the back of the net.
The Orange and Brown fired nine shots on net in the second, but goaltender Stephon Williams – who stopped 18-of-21 shots on the night – turned them all away. Minnesota State recorded 10 shots in the period, and at the 12:38 mark, C.J. Franklin knotted the contest at one apiece.
The third period was all Bowling Green's, however, as the Falcons recorded 10 shots and scored the only two goals of the frame. The two club's traded scoring opportunities early on, but it was Spezia's goal just 7:32 into the period that put BGSU on top for good.
After originally being denied, Spezia scooped up his own rebound and tapped it into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal. Senior forwards Adam Berkle and Dan DeSalvo were credited with assists on the play.
With Minnesota State's goalie pulled, Dufour gave the hosts a two-goal advantage with 1:49 remaining in the contest. Matt Pohlkamp corralled the puck in the corner of the Maverick zone, split a pair of defenders and found an open Pierre-Luc Mercier in the slot. Mercier's shot was denied by Williams, but an unmarked Dufour was standing all alone at the doorstep of the cage – he banged it home from there.
The Falcons were outshot on the night, 27-21, but held Minnesota State scoreless on six power play chances. Dufour led all Falcons with four shots, while Spezia and DeSalvo registered three apiece. Jose Delgadillo chipped in with a game-high three blocked shots. Tommy Burke picked up his first win of the season, which moves his career record to 20-14-9.
"Tonight was a good example of us maybe taking a step in the right direction as a program," said Burke. "We want to win at a championship level. We're not here to finish in the middle of the league. We're here to win championships."
The Falcons will hit the road to face Alaska, opening the series on Friday, Nov. 7 and wrapping it up the next evening. Both games a schedule to begin at 11:07 p.m.
