Strong pitching, timely hitting propel Orange and Brown to victory Wednesday
WINTER HAVEN, Fla.—The Bowling Green State University baseball team received strong pitching and timely hitting on Wednesday afternoon, defeating University of Evansville 4-2 at the Central Florida Russ Matt Invitational. It was the Falcons second straight win, as they improved to 5-10 on the season. The game was played at Chain O' Lakes Park, the former spring training home of both the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians.
Jason Link got the start for the Orange and Brown on Wednesday afternoon, picking up his first win of the season. Link went four innings of work before reaching his pitch count, allowing just three hits and no runs. He was relieved by Ben Singer, who also went four innings without allowing a run.
Evansville had their best scoring chance throughout the first eight innings in the bottom of the second. The Purple Aces would get a one-out single followed by a walk to get a runner into scoring position. The next batter would single through the right side of the infield, but Jesse Rait would come up throwing and his one-hop throw to catcher T.J. Losby was in time to gun out the runner at home, keeping the Aces off the scoreboard.
The Falcons would take advantage of the strong defensive play, scoring two in the top of the third to grab an early lead. Designated hitter Trey Keegan was hit by a 2-2 pitch from Evansville lefty Cole Isom to begin the frame. A Brian Bien single to right center would advance Keegan all the way to third, and he would score on Andrew Kubuski's RBI single through the right side. Bien would then score on an RBI single by Jeremy Shay, extending the Falcon lead to 2-0.
Greg Basalyga would lead off the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run to left field, his second in as many days. Bien, Kubuski, and Shay would single consecutively with one out, extending the Bowling Green lead to 4-0 at the midway point.
Evansville would threaten with two runs in the ninth, but reliever Ethan McKenney would close out the game to secure the victory for the Falcons.
Bowling Green will take Thursday off, before returning to action at the Russ Matt Invitational on Friday morning. The Falcons will play the Bucknell Bison in a doubleheader beginning at 10:00 a.m.
