Setting The Tone
Bowling Green State University baseball will finally play a home game this weekend, as they host Toledo on Tuesday afternoon in the first game of a home-and-home midweek series. The Falcons have started the 2014 season by playing 27 consecutive games away from home—a program record. BGSU will travel to Toledo on Wednesday afternoon to complete the two-game series.
Falcons Win Second Straight MAC Series Over The Weekend
BGSU continued its winnings ways in Mid-American Conference action over the weekend, taking 2-of-3 from Western Michigan at Mercy Field in Toledo. It was the second consecutive series that the Falcons have won, after being swept during the first weekend of MAC play at Ball State. On Saturday, in the first game of the series, the Falcons would get a stellar outing from redshirt senior Mike Frank on the mound, winning 3-1. Frank went the distance, striking out a career-high 12 batters and allowing just one run on four hits. The Orange and Brown then split a doubleheader on Sunday, winning the nightcap 12-9 to claim the series.
Frank Named MAC Pitcher Of The Week, Again
Maumee, Ohio native Mike Frank was named the MAC East Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week on Monday (April 7) morning. The redshirt senior went the distance against Western Michigan, striking out a career-best 12 hitters. He allowed just one run on four hits in the 3-1 victory. Frank's 12 K's matched a single-game high for any Mid-American Conference pitcher to date during the 2014 season. Last weekend, Frank defeated Northern Illinois by going seven innings and allowing just one hit to earn the award.
Losby Heating Up
Senior captain T.J. Losby struggled during much of nonconference play to begin this season, but has hit .405 since MAC play began three weeks ago. Over the weekend, Losby went 8-for-12 against Western Michigan with a team-high four RBI. In Sunday's 12-9 win over the Broncos, the Bryan, Ohio native went 5-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. It was the first time this season that a Falcon has had five hits in a game and tied his career high.
Tuesday's Pitching Matchup
Toledo – RHP Kyle Slack (So., Edwardsburg, Ohio) 2-4, 7.12 ERA, 24.0 IP, 29 H, 19 K
Bowling Green – LHP Brett Fitzwater (So., Fairview, Ohio) 1-1, 5.68, 6.1 IP, 5 H, 7 K
A Bird's Eye View: Scouting The Falcons
Bowling Green enters the week with an overall record of 10-17 and a 4-5 mark in Mid-American Conference play. The Falcons have won four of their last five games, winning MAC series' against NIU and WMU the past two weekends. As a team, the Orange and Brown are batting .271 with a team ERA of 4.54. Several Falcons have had strong offensive seasons, led by Brian Bien's .380 average. Brandon Howard has also been on fire lately, as he is second on the team with a .373 average. Jeremy Shay (.319) and T.J. Losby (.305) are both batting over .300 while anchoring the middle of the lineup. Two Falcons—Bien and Patrick Lancaster—have already registered at least 100 at-bats. On the mound, Falcon pitchers are led by reliever Jason Link. Link is 1-0 with a 1.27 ERA in eight appearances. Ethan McKenney leads the team in appearances with 12, compiling a 2.16 ERA with no record and a team-high three saves. BGSU has used their team speed to their advantage in 2014, stealing 30 bases out of a possible 39 attempts. Bien (7-9), Howard (6-7), and Lancaster (9-13) lead the way on the base paths. The Falcons stole just 37 bases during the entire 55-game slate in 2013.
The Rocket Report
Toledo is coached by Cory Mee, who is in his 11th season at the helm of the Rockets. UT has a team batting average of .241 and an ERA of 4.05. Sophomore Deion Tansel leads Toledo with a .366 batting average, but is the only UT player with an average above .300. The Rockets have a slugging percentage of .299 and an on-base percentage of .317. Pitching has been one of UT's strong suits, as two Rocket relievers have an earned run average of less than 1.00. Andrew Marra (0.60) and Steven Calhoun (0.96) have paced the Rockets allowing just four earned runs in 43.0 combined innings. UT also has a lot of team speed, having stolen 31 bases on 43 attempts this year.
The All-Time Series
This week's series will feature the 207th and 208th all-time games in the long and historical series between Bowling Green and Toledo, dating back to 1921. The Falcons lead the Rockets in the series 120-86 after winning 5-of-6 games a season ago in the Battle Of I75. Bowling Green swept Toledo at Scott Park in a three-game series last season, then met UT in three consecutive games during the MAC Tournament. In the second round, Bowling Green beat Toledo 4-3 to force the Rockets into the elimination bracket. UT would bests BG the next day 5-2 to force a winner-goes-to-the-championship matchup. In that game, Cody Apthorpe would go seven innings as BGSU would hang on for a 1-0 win to eliminate the Rockets and advance to the MAC Tournament Championship Game.
