BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University baseball team wore gray uniforms on Tuesday afternoon against Xavier, as they raised awareness for National Brain Tumor Awareness Month which occurs annually in May. Two honorary members of the BGSU baseball team through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation—Braeden (10 years old) and Bronson (8) Steiner—were recognized at the game as they fight pediatric brain tumors. The game took over four hours, as a one hour and seven minute rain delay during the seventh inning prolonged the contest. Xavier would come out on top, 7-0, over the Falcons at Warren E. Steller Field. With the loss, the Falcons are now 23-24 on the season.
Xavier kept the Falcons off the scoreboard in the bottom of the first, in what turned out to be Bowling Green's best scoring opportunity of the game. Brian Bien would double to begin the bottom of the first. With one out, Bien would take off for third and Jeremy Shay would line a pitch towards the right field corner. With Bien around third base, Xavier right fielder Mitch Elliott would make a diving catch and get up and throw out Bien at second for an inning-ending double play.
The Musketeers would ride that momentum over the next two innings, as they would score six runs on nine hits during the second and third innings, forcing the Falcons to turn to their bullpen.
Bowling Green's bullpen was a strong point of the game, as seven relievers combined to allow just one earned run over 6.1 innings. They allowed just four hits while striking out seven batters.
Although the Falcons mustered just one hit over the final eight innings—a Jesse Rait single up the middle—head coach Danny Schmitz was able to get 25 players into the game. It was Bowling Green's final tune up game, as the Falcons will now travel to Buffalo to conclude the regular season.
Bowling Green enters their three-game series at Buffalo, which begins Thursday, needing just one win to qualify for the MAC Tournament. The Falcons are currently fifth, just one-half game ahead of Buffalo with three games to play.
