AMHERST, N.Y.—The Bowling Green State University baseball team played 20 innings of baseball on Saturday, beating the University at Buffalo two times. The two teams resumed a suspended game from Thursday to start the day, before the Falcons won the final two games of the day, 8-5 and 7-1. With the victories, the Falcons finish the regular season at 25-25 overall, 15-12 in Mid-American Conference play. Bowling Green will play Kent State in the first round of the MAC Tournament on Wednesday.
"We are really proud with the way we bounced back today to finish the regular season with two wins," head coach Danny Schmitz said. "It was a long day of baseball, but I am proud of the way our guys stayed focused all day long."
After falling in the resumption of Thursday's suspended game, 8-1, the Falcons would get right to work in the second game of the series.
Both starters were impressive, as neither team was able to crack the scoreboard in the first four innings. The Falcons would get things started in the top of the fifth, as Patrick Lancaster would double down the right field line to start things off.
Buffalo would turn to the bullpen, as both teams wanted to make sure that all of their pitchers got work on the final day of the regular season.
The Falcons would not greet Buffalo's Anthony Magovney kindly, as seven of the next eight batters reached base to give the Falcons a 5-0 lead at the midway point of the game.
Buffalo would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth, but Devin Daugherty would work out of a jam with a strikeout to end the inning and hold onto the Bowling Green advantage.
The Falcons would add a run in the top of the sixth, as Logan Walker got things going with a single up the middle. Walker would be retired on a ground ball off the bat of Brian Bien, but Bien would beat out the potential double play. Jake Thomas would rip a triple into the gap—the 12th of his career to move into a third-place tie for career triples at BGSU—to score Bien and increase the Falcon lead to four, at 6-2.
Buffalo would narrow the gap to 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh, but Jason Link would work out of the jam to maintain the lead and give the Falcon offense another chance to attack UB pitching.
The Falcons would add single runs in each of the final two innings, holding on for the win, 8-5.
In the second full game of the day, and third of the weekend, the Orange and Brown would jump out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Brandon Howard would be hit by a pitch to start the inning, and would then steal second base. After Lancaster walked, both runners would swipe bases to move into scoring position. Howard would come in to score on an RBI groundout by Logan Walker, and Greg Basalyga would single home Lancaster.
In the top of the third, T.J. Losby would double down the right field line with one out to start things off for the Falcons. Losby would score on a single through the right side off the bat of Andrew Kubuski.
The Falcons would increase their lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning. Kubuski would reach on an error to start things off with one out, and would hustle into second base as the ball got away from the Buffalo shortstop. Howard would walk, and both runners would score on a double off the bat of Lancaster.
Walker and Basalyga would both record RBI hits in the seventh inning to increase the Bowling Green lead to 7-1, a lead which the Falcons would hold on to.
Trevor Blaylock would come into the game for the final two innings, mowing down Buffalo in order in both inning, striking out all six batters he faced in the game.
With the conclusion of the regular season, the Falcons will turn their attention to the MAC Tournament, which begins on Wednesday at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio.
"We are happy with the way we finished the regular season, but we know that we have a great challenge ahead of us at the MAC Tournament next week," Schmitz said. "We will be ready when we take the field on Wednesday against Kent State."
