The Week Ahead In Falcon Baseball
The Bowling Green State University baseball team returns home after a four-game road trip, starting a four-game homestand this week with a Tuesday game against Findlay. The Falcons and Oilers will do battle beginning at 3:05 p.m. at Warren E. Steller Field. Following the midweek matchup, the Falcons will welcome Miami University to town for a three-game Mid-American Conference series, beginning on Friday afternoon.
The Falcon Coaching Staff
Bowling Green is coached by Danny Schmitz, who is in his 25th season at the helm of the Orange and Brown. Schmitz owns 643 career wins and 333 Mid-American Conference wins in his career, both of which are the third-most in MAC history. He is assisted by Rick Blanc, who is in his eighth season in charge of BGSU's pitchers and recruiting. Ryan Shay coaches the hitters and infielders, while Garrett Gray coaches the catchers under Schmitz.
About Falcon Baseball
The BGSU baseball program is in the midst of its 95th season playing varsity baseball, with an all-time record of 1,594-1,388-27. The Falcons have won seven MAC East championships, five MAC regular season titles, and have won the MAC Tournament on three occasions. Bowling Green has qualified for the MAC Tournament 11 times since 1994, including six times in the last seven seasons.
About Findlay
Findlay enters the week with an overall record of 6-15 on the season. The Oilers are currently 1-5 in their conference, but play a conference doubleheader at Northwood Monday afternoon. As a team Findlay is hitting .220 entering the week with an earned run average of 3.43. The Oilers are coached by Stephen Parrill, who is in the midst of his second season at the helm of the UF baseball program. Parrill is assisted by Jaren Stutzman, Brian Makowski, Marty Gazarek, and Paul Vrzal.
The Findlay Series
The Bowling Green and Findlay series dates back to 1919, when Bowling Green lost 26-10 to the Oilers. However, the Falcons lead the all-time series against UF 65-16. Tuesday's matchup will be the 82nd all-time, but the first meeting since March 24, 2009 when the Falcons defeated Findlay 10-5.
They Said It
Head coach Danny Schmitz on Tuesday's game versus Findlay: "Tomorrow's game is important for our team to keep improving and building off of Saturday's win at Northern Illinois. Findlay is a quality team from the GLIAC and is also very well coached. We look forward to playing them in front of our home fans at Steller Field."
Weekend Review
The Bowling Green baseball team picked up a crucial win in Mid-American Conference play over the weekend, defeating Northern Illinois on Saturday, 8-2. After losing the first two games of the series to drop to 0-5 in MAC play, the Falcons got a strong pitching performance and timely hitting to get back into the win column.
Carey Picks Up First Career Win
Bowling Green entered the series finale at Northern Illinois in desperate need of a win, having lost five straight to begin MAC play. True freshman Zac Carey stepped up against the Huskies, delivering a career-high 7.1 innings to get the Falcons back in the win column and pick up his first career victory. Carey surrendered an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning, after allowing a leadoff single. He then proceeded to retire 19 straight Northern Illinois batters before a one-out double in the seventh. Carey struck out just two batters, but was efficient in retiring 22-of-26 batters faced on just 99 pitches.
Drewes Delivers For Falcons
True freshman Derek Drewes entered the weekend 0-for-8 in his career at the plate, but then went 3-for-5 at Northern Illinois. The Tinora High School graduate recorded his first career hit in a pinch-hit opportunity during Saturday's first game. Then, Drewes picked up his first career start in the second game, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. In the top of the fifth Drewes delivered a two-out RBI single to put the Falcons ahead for good. Then, he capped off a five-run sixth inning with a two-RBI single in his very next at-bat.
Keegan's Three-Hit Day Propels BG
Trey Keegan tied his career high with three hits in a win at NIU over the weekend, going 3-for-4 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. Keegan had a home run and two singles in the game, setting a new season high with six total bases in the game. His two runs scored and two RBI in the game, along with his third home run of the season, got the Falcons back into the win column for the first time since March 10.
Smith Leading Falcons In MAC Play
Junior left fielder Matt Smith leads the Falcons offensively during two weekends of MAC play, batting .421 in six games thus far. Smith has eight hits in 19 at-bats with an on-base percentage of .476. Overall he is third on the team with a .303 average in 2015 with four doubles and one triple.
Illinois Natives Pitch In Homecoming
Two Illinois natives – Tony Landi and Jevon Boyd – pitched in their homecoming over the weekend. Landi pitched an inning in Saturday's first game, while Boyd pitched 1.1 innings in the same game. It was Boyd's debut in a Falcon uniform.
Stealing For The Wins
Bowling Green is 6-0 this season when stealing multiple bases in a game. Against NIU, the Falcons stole three bases – two by Kory Brown and one by Brandon Howard – in their 8-2 win on Saturday. The Falcons did not steal a base in the first two games of the series. In the Falcons six wins this season they have stolen 19 bases as a team, while in their 16 losses they have swiped just seven total bases.
Seventh Inning Stretch
BGSU is outscoring opponents 19-3 this season in the seventh inning of games, by far their largest margin in a single inning throughout the 2015 season. It is no coincidence, that Bowling Green is 6-0 when leading after seven innings this season, but 0-16 when trailing or tied at that same juncture in the game.
Looking To Find A Groove
Tuesday's game against Findlay provides the Falcons with an opportunity to win back-to-back games for just the second time all season. The Orange and Brown swept a doubleheader in Winter Haven, Fla. on March 10 to accomplish that feat, but have the opportunity to once again do it to finish the month of March strong.
Howard Running Into Record Book
Brandon Howard stole his 11th base of the season over the weekend at NIU, and now has 43 for his career. The redshirt junior is eighth all-time in career stolen bases, just one shy of moving into a seventh-place tie with Glenn Honeycutt (1961-63). Last season Howard stole 23 bases, which was tied for sixth-most in school history for a single season.
Spring Fever At Steller Field
Tuesday's game will be the 23rd of the season for the Falcons, but just the fifth at Warren E. Steller Field. After playing the first 14 games of the season on the road, the Falcons will be looking to find their groove as the weather warms up. The Orange and Brown is scheduled to play 16 of their last 28 games at Steller Field in 2015, providing them with an opportunity to get on a roll and finish the season strong.
