EMERSON, Ga. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team moved to 6-6 on the season and 5-1 on the spring-break trip by defeating Presbyterian College, 6-1, Friday afternoon in Perfect Game Tournament action. Five of Bowling Green's six runs were knocked in with two outs on the board.
"This was a big bounce-back win for us," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We didn't play a very good game on Wednesday, and to regroup on our off day and come out and play like we did today – that's a good sign."
The early portion of the game was dominated by Justin Mott and the Falcons' two-out hitting. In the top of the second, BGSU had two outs and nobody on base, but erupted for a two-run frame.
Derek Drewes got things started with a beautiful drag bunt that hugged the line before hitting third base. Nick Glanzman followed with a bunt single and after Cody Callaway walked to load the bases, Justin Mott poked a single into left-centerfield that scored both Drewes and Glanzman. Bowling Green's catcher then threw out his fourth would-be base stealer on the year the next half frame, helping Schildt register the always-appreciated shutdown inning.
For Mott, it was his second two-RBI single of the season, and also his third and fourth RBI on the young season. In Bowling Green's season-opening win at East Tennessee, Mott singled up the middle to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead.
In the third, the Orange and Brown knocked in another run with two outs. Greg Basalyga beat out an infield single up the middle, scoring R.J. Williams – who walked to leadoff the frame – to give BGSU a 3-0 lead.
Presbyterian College got on the board in the third to pull within two at 3-1, but failed to capitalize on a big opportunity in the fifth. After an error loaded the bases for the Blue Hose with only one out, Callaway helped turn an inning-ending double play. The shortstop stabbed a line drive, and then fired over to first to catch the runner that was too far off the bag.
Meanwhile, C.J. Schildt had a career day for the Orange and Brown. Schildt worked 6.2 innings, allowing his one run on six hits while striking out five and walking four. He ended his outing by allowing two-consecutive base hits in the seventh, but Devin Daugherty -- who picked up his second save of the season -- left both runners on base by striking out the first batter he faced. Schildt was also able to work out of several jams throughout the ballgame.
The lefty left runners at the corners in the first, limited the damage in the Blue Hose' one-run third by leaving runners at first and second, and got the huge double play in the fifth to work out of the bases-loaded jam unscathed. Schildt worked perfect frames in both the fourth and sixth, and thanks to a Mott's caught stealing, faced the minimum in the second.
Matt Smith added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, inching BGSU's lead up to a 5-1 mark. Kory Brown and Callaway worked one-out walks, and after the second out of the inning, a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring positon. Smith promptly singled up the middle to plate the pair.
Brown tacked on one more run for the Falcons – giving BGSU a 6-1 lead – with a sacrifice fly in the ninth. Callaway doubled to leadoff the inning, and moved over to third on a Mott single. Daugherty went on to secure the win for the Orange and Brown with a scoreless ninth.
Bowling Green will continue play at the Perfect Game Tournament Saturday with a doubleheader, featuring games against Savannah State and Nebraska-Omaha. The ballgame against Savannah State is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start time, while the Nebraska-Omaha game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The Falcons will wrap up the six-game schedule in Emerson with a 12 p.m. noon game against Presbyterian College on Sunday.
