March 07, 2016 | Baseball
EMERSON, Ga. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team continues its spring-break trip this week at the Perfect Game Tournament in Emerson, Georgia over March 8-13. In Emerson, the Falcons will take on Alabama State, Presbyterian, Nebraska-Omaha and Savannah State.
This past weekend, the Orange and Brown swept the competition at the Elon Tournament, as the Falcons went 3-0 and were the only team to finish the three-game round robin with an undefeated record. Bowling Green opened the tournament with a 6-2 win over host Elon on Friday, before knocking off Appalachian State on Saturday by the same score. The Falcons wrapped up play at the Elon Tournament with a 5-4 win over Stony Brook on Sunday.
After winning the first game of the season at East Tennessee by a score of 7-1, the Falcons had lost four straight, but three-consecutive wins at Elon have inched BGSU's record up to 4-5.
"Our spring trip got off to a great start at the Elon Tournament," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We were able to build from game to game, and we improved throughout the weekend. But we still have six games to go on this trip, and we are going to be facing some very good teams in Emerson this week."
The Falcons received strong efforts across the board at Elon. Cody Callaway led the offensive attack, as he went 5-for-10 on the weekend with five RBI and two runs. Callaway registered at least one hit and one RBI in all three games, highlighted by a 3-for-4 game with three RBI in a win over Appalachian State on Saturday.
Additionally, Kory Brown, Randy Righter and Hunter Clanin recorded a hit in all three ballgames, while Dan Ferguson and R.J. Williams recorded their first-career hits. Ferguson and Williams also picked up an RBI apiece. Logan Giddings notched the first multiple-hit game of his career, as he went 2-for-2 in Sunday's victory over Stony Brook.
On the mound, the Orange and Brown got strong starts out of C.J. Schildt, Zac Carey and Andrew Lacinak. Schildt pitched five innings of one-run ball on Friday, while Carey and Lacinak picked up their first wins of the season on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Carey logged 6.2 innings, striking out a career-best six batters. He allowed just one earned run and three hits. Lacinak went five innings on Sunday, and worked around seven hits by inducing three double plays.
The bullpen was huge all weekend, as well. Tony Landi earned saves on Friday and Sunday, stranding the tying run at third in the win over Stony Brook. On Saturday, Kody Brown recorded the save by throwing 2.1 innings of hitless baseball. Devin Daugherty allowed his first earned run of the season on Friday, but picked up the win by throwing 2.1 innings and striking out four batters. On Sunday, Brad Croy – who pitched two innings – and Trevor Farrell – who threw one frame – logged scoreless outings, bridging the gap from Lacinak to Landi.
