SCOUTING THE BRONCOS
Western Michigan will enter play this weekend with a 1-12 record, having lost its last three ballgames. WMU's one win on the year came on March 8 against Georgetown in Port Charlotte, Florida. Offensively, the Broncos have been hitting the ball pretty well. WMU owns a .260 team average, and has seven players hitting over .300. Pitching has been the issue to this point, as the Broncos own a 6.02 team ERA. Keegan Akin has been the exception. He's been tremendous to this point. In four starts, he's given up just four runs over 24 innings, while having struck out 30 batters. Jack Szott has been great out of the bullpen, as well. He has given up just three earned runs over 16.1 innings of work. Remarkably, WMU has only needed three starters. Along with Akin, Derek Schneider and Tanner Allison have made starts for the Broncos.
SCHMITZ SAYS…
"We continue to inch closer to MAC play, and this is another opportunity to improve before the most important part of our season," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We've been a streaky team so far, and need to find some consistency."
BEST SPRING-BREAK TRIP SINCE 2005
Bowling Green recently wrapped up its best spring-break trip since 2005, going 6-3 on the trip while competing in the Elon Tournament (Elon, North Carolina) and the Perfect Game Tournament (Emerson, Georgia) over March 4-13. At the Elon Tournament from March 4-6, Bowling Green swept the competition, earning wins over Elon, Appalachian State and Stony Brook. BGSU was the only team at the tournament to go undefeated. The Falcons then traveled south to Emerson, and went 3-3. The 6-3 record marked the program's best spring-break trip since the 2005 team went 6-1.
STELLER SNAPS HOME RUN DROUGHT
In Bowling Green's home-opening loss to Central Michigan on Tuesday (March 15), the Falcons hit two home runs, after not hitting a single homer over the first 15 games of the season. Although the Falcons lost, 10-5, Cody Callaway and Riley Minorik registered their first-career home runs. Callaway's two-run shot in the second put BGSU on top, 3-0, while Minorik's home run in the fifth pulled the Falcons within two runs at 7-5. Both dingers were hit to left field.
DAUGHERTY DOMINATING THE COMPETITION
Senior right-handed pitcher Devin Daugherty, to put it mildly, has been tremendous this season. The Wooster, Ohio native, through 17.1 innings of work, has allowed just 10 hits, three earned runs, and owns a 1.56 ERA. Opponents are batting .167 off Daugherty, and he has struck out 19 batters while issuing just six walks. Daugherty also has two wins, and two saves. At the Perfect Game Tournament, in two appearances, the righty showed his versatility, picking up a win over Alabama State and a save against Presbyterian College. In Daugherty's most recently appearance on Tuesday against Central Michigan, the senior no-hit the Chippewas while logging 2.1 innings.
TGIF? MORE LIKE "CJIF"
Each Friday so far to open up the 2016 season, Falcon baseball fans have woken up and said, "Thank Goodness C.J. is pitching." Redshirt-junior C.J. Schildt has stepped up in his first season as a Falcon, and has solidified himself as Bowling Green's Friday starter. In all four of his starts this season, Schildt has given the Falcons a chance to win. Schildt, who owns a 2-1 record with a 2.08 ERA, has gone at least five innings and hasn't allowed more than two earned runs across his four starts. In three of those starts, he's allowed only one run. In fact, in all three of those ballgames, Bowling Green has picked up the victory. The southpaw leads the club in innings pitched with 21.2, and is tied for the lead in strikeouts (19) with Devin Daugherty.
CAREY IS BACK ON TRACK
After being named the MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year and being tabbed a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2015, sophomore right-hander Zac Carey has gotten back on track after a couple of rough starts to open the season. Carey has earned back-to-back wins over his last two starts. On March 5, Carey pitched the Falcons to a 2-0 record at the Elon Tournament by notching his first victory of the year. Carey went 6.2 innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run. Carey then dominated Savannah State on March 12. The sophomore allowed just one earned run for the second-straight start, and went a season-high 7.1 innings. In both starts on the spring-break trip, Carey registered six strikeouts.
CALLAWAY OFF TO STRONG SOPHOMORE SEASON
Infielder Cody Callaway has supplied the Falcons with a lot of offense this year, and his sophomore campaign is off to a solid start. Across 13 games played and 11 starts, Callaway is leading the club in doubles (5), RBI (9), extra-base hits (6), slugging percentage (.486), and is tied for the team lead in home runs with one. If the Elon Tournament awarded an offensive MVP, it would have been Callaway. In the three-game round robin, Callaway recorded at least one hit and one RBI in every game. His tournament was highlighted by a 3-for-4, three-RBI game in a win over Appalachian State on March 6. He hit a double in the final two games at the Elon Tournament, and hit his first-career home run on Tuesday (March 15) against Central Michigan.
OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION AT SECOND BASE
Although it's a great problem to have, skipper Danny Schmitz has had a difficult time deciding who to start at second base this season. Derek Drewes leads the team with a .375 batting average, while Riley Minorik is third on the team with a .333 average. Minorik is also second on the team with a .485 slugging percentage, having hit two doubles and a home run. Drewes has played in nine games, and has a total of nine hits. The pair has combined for eight runs, 14 hits, two doubles, three RBI, and three walks. Minorik has not struck out this season, while Drewes has been carved up just twice over 24 at-bats. Minorik solidified his hot start to the season with his first-career homer on March 15 in BGSU's home opener versus Central Michigan.
THE CATCHERS ARE COMPLEMENTING EACH OTHER
Junior Dan Ferguson and sophomore Justin Mott have complemented each other really well early on in the season. Ferguson is second on the team with a .357 batting average. He's also driven in five runs, and is slugging .429 in eight appearances with four starts. Although Mott has been no slouch at the plate, having knocked in four runs, he's been spectacular behind the plate. The Falcon catcher has gunned down 50 percent of would-be base stealers on the season, having thrown out 6-of-12 runners.
FALCONS SEE FIRST-EVER ACTION
A total of three Falcons made their collegiate debuts over the spring-break trip, while another made his season debut. Joe McGuinness hit a two-run double in his first-ever plate appearance in a win over Savannah State on March 12, while Mitchell Schneider and Axel Bueter made their debuts later that evening against Nebraska-Omaha. Schneider got a plate appearance, while Bueter struck out the only batter he faced. Wes Rickenberg struck out two batters in a scoreless frame in the Nebraska-Omaha game – his first appearance on the season.
SCHMITZ ASSEMBLES STAFF FILLED WITH FALCONS
With the addition of 2014 BGSU graduate Jeremy Shay as volunteer assistant coach in the offseason, head coach Danny Schmitz's staff is now entirely made up of former Falcons. In fact, all three of Schmitz's assistants played for him during their careers at BGSU. All three also won a championship under Schmitz's guidance. Rick Blanc – who enters his 9th year on staff – was a part of the 1998 squad that won a MAC Tournament title, and participated in NCAA Regionals in Coral Gables, Florida. Ryan Shay – who completed his first season on staff in 2015 – won back-to-back MAC regular-season titles as a player in 2008 and 2009. Shay's brother, Jeremy, enters his first year on the coaching staff. Shay was a part of the 2014 team's Cinderella run late in the season that was capped by a MAC Tournament title and a birth in the NCAA Regionals in Louisville, Kentucky.

FALCONS PICKED TO FINISH THIRD IN MAC EAST
The Falcons were picked to finish third in the East Division, according to the conference's coaches poll. With 43 points, BGSU was picked above Miami (37) and Buffalo (22), and below Kent State (63) and Ohio (55). Central Michigan was picked to win the West Division. Kent State was picked to win the MAC Tournament, garnering four votes. Bowling Green received one vote to win the tournament, along with Ball State, Miami, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan, while Central Michigan earned two votes.
FOUR CAPTAINS IN 2016
In early October, head coach Danny Schmitz announced that seniors Kory Brown, Devin Daugherty and Matt Smith, along with junior Greg Basalyga, would serve as the program's captains for the 2016 season. Brown served as a captain for the 2015 campaign, as well.
