ELON, N.C. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team opened up play at the Elon Tournament by defeating hosts Elon University, 6-2, Friday (March 4) night at Latham Park in come-from-behind fashion. The victory for Bowling Green snaps a five-game losing streak. The Orange and Brown registered five two-out RBI in the ballgame.
"This was a big team win for us," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "C.J. Schildt gave us a big-time outing, and our bats got us timely hits. Devin Daugherty and Tony Landi then recorded important outs from out of the bullpen."
The Falcons trailed 1-0 in the top of the seventh, but went on to plate three runs before tacking on an insurance run in the eighth, and two more runs in the ninth.
Kory Brown plated pinch-runner Addison Rospert with the bases loaded to tie the game at 1-1, rolling a ground out over to shortstop. Nick Glanzman – who entered the game hitting .409 – then delivered a two-out, two-RBI single into left field.
Hunter Clanin and Matt Smith added important insurance runs with two-out doubles in the eighth and ninth, respectively. Cody Callaway also added a two-out RBI, concluding the game's scoring with a single into right that scored Smith, giving the Orange and Brown a 6-2 lead in the ninth.
Elon nearly tied things up in the bottom of the eighth, before BGSU's two-run ninth, but Tony Landi was able to work out of a tough jam with the lead still intact.
Devin Daugherty – who took over for starter C.J. Schildt in the sixth – pitched scoreless frames in both the sixth and seventh, but left with one out and the bases loaded in the eighth. Landi proceeded to force a ground out that plated a run, and then with the tying run at second, Landi induced another grounder that got BGSU into the ninth with a 4-2 lead.
Smith and Callaway's run-scoring hits inched BGSU's lead up to 6-2, giving Landi a larger lead to work with in the bottom of the ninth. Landi secured the victory and earned the save with a scoreless ninth, recording two-consecutive outs with a runner at third.
With the win, Bowling Green improves to 2-5, while Elon drops to 4-6 on the season.
For the third time in as many starts, Schildt gave BGSU a chance to win. He logged five innings, yielding five hits while walking two and striking out four. He worked out of a bases loaded jam in the first. With the bases loaded and only one out, he got a force out at home before striking out the next batter.
Daugherty picked up the win for Bowling Green, pitching two and a third, allowing just two hits while striking out four and walking two. The run charged to Daugherty was the first earned run that he's allowed this season over 9.1 innings. Landi allowed just one hit over his 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball.
Bowling Green out-hit Elon, 10-8, and committed zero errors to Elon's one. Kory Brown went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Randy Righter also went 2-for-4 with a run scored. In his first start of the season, Derek Drewes went 2-for-2 and scored a run.
Bowling Green will continue play at the Elon Tournament tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. with a game against Appalachian State. The Mountaineers defeated Stony Brook by a score of 4-0 right before BGSU's game against Elon. BGSU will conclude play at the Elon Tournament with a noon first pitch on Sunday against Stony Brook.
