ELON, N.C. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team moved to 2-0 on the weekend at the Elon Tournament by defeating Appalachian State University, 6-2, at Latham Park Saturday (March 5) evening. The Orange and Brown scored in four of the game's first five innings, and had five two-out RBI. Ten of BGSU's 12 runs this weekend have been driven in with two outs on the board.
"We talked about coming out and playing well after getting a win yesterday," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We weren't happy with how we played in the second game at ETSU, after we won the day before. We were able to build on yesterday's win, and put up back-to-back strong performances."
After a couple of rough starts to open the season, the Falcons got a big-time effort from starter Zac Carey. Carey picked up his first victory of the season, logging 6.2 innings. The righty allowed his two runs (one earned) on four hits, while striking out a career-best six batters and walking two.
Carey left four runners in scoring position across the first four innings, prior to facing the minimum in the fifth, and striking out the side in order in the sixth. Two hits and a run spelled the end for Carey in the seventh, but Kody Brown left a runner at second and induced a fly out against the first batter he faced to keep BGSU's 4-2 lead intact.
The Falcons struck early and often, and played from in front from the first inning. Matt Smith brought home the first run of the ballgame with an RBI ground out, and then Kory Brown scored Dan Ferguson – who was making his first start as a Falcon – with a single up the middle in the second. After Appalachian State scored in the third to make it a 2-1 game, Ferguson registered his first-career RBI in the fourth. His single up the box plated Derek Drewes.
Cody Callaway then took over the ballgame. An infield single in the fifth made it 4-1 Falcons, and after the Mountaineers' run in the seventh, Callaway pulled a two-RBI double off the left-field wall to conclude the game's scoring. The two-out double – which was Bowling Green's 10th  two-out RBI of the weekend – put the Falcons up by a score of 6-2.
Kody Brown earned the save, going on to pitch a total of 2.1 innings of hitless baseball. The save is Brown's first of the season. Brown struck out two batters, and issued zero walks. For the second-consecutive game, Bowling Green out-hit its opponent. The Orange and Brown notched 10 hits to Appalachian State's four.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 3-5 on the young season, while the Mountaineers drop to 2-9. Cody Callaway had a big day for the Falcons, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run. Smith was the other Falcon with multiple hits, as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Kory Brown registered an RBI for the second-straight game, while also scoring a run and drawing two walks in a 1-for-3 effort.
The Falcons stole a season-high three bases, as Brown, Drewes and Smith each swiped a bag.
Bowling Green will conclude play at the Elon Tournament tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 p.m. with a game against Stony Brook University. The Seawolves were defeated by Appalachian State to open the invitational on Friday, before knocking off Elon University Saturday afternoon.
