BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Steller Field on Sunday (May 15) afternoon by the Kent State University Golden Flashes. Kent State won the first game, 10-1, before claiming the second game by a score of 8-2.
Bowling Green honored its five seniors on Senior Day in a ceremony prior to the first game. Seniors Kory Brown, Devin Daugherty, Tyler Greiner, Andrew Lacinak and Matt Smith all played their last games at Steller Field.
"It was great to honor our five seniors before the game," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "They have meant a lot to our program. It's really unfortunate that we did not play our best baseball this weekend. We are all going to have to dig deep, and give our best effort next weekend at Buffalo."
After losing the first game, 10-1, Bowling Green had to dig themselves out of an early hole in game two. Kent State scored three runs in the first inning, before scoring three more runs in the top of the fifth.
Andrew Lacinak exited the ballgame after 4.2 innings. He gave way to Devin Daugherty, who pitched phenomenally in his last ever appearance at Steller Field. Daugherty pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just two hits while striking out two batters.
Daugherty has now made 28 appearances on the season, and is just one appearance away from tying the program's single-season record. Nick Bruns made 29 appearances during the Falcons' memorable 2013 season.
Tyler Greiner also had a nice game in his final appearance at Steller Field. The senior put Bowling Green on the board in the fifth with a solo home run – his second of the season. Greiner caught a nice game, and went 2-for-4 at the plate. Kory Brown also registered a hit on Senior Day in the second game of the afternoon.
With the pair of losses on the day, the Falcons were eliminated from MAC Tournament contention. Bowling Green will conclude its 2016 season next weekend at Buffalo. The Falcons and Bulls will battle over May 19-21.
