TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team wrapped up a three-game series at No. 8 Florida State on Sunday (May 8) afternoon with a 6-1 loss at Dick Howser Stadium. The Falcons scored the first run of the game, but Florida State closed the game with six unanswered runs.
"We came out and competed hard early, and got that 1-0 lead," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "But we just had way too many mistakes. You can't give a team like that extra outs, and we gave them quite a few. We had three early errors, and that just can't happen. But we need to now set our sights on Youngstown State, and then Kent State. We have a huge week coming up at Steller Field."
Bowling Green, with the loss, falls to 16-31 on the campaign. With the sweep, Florida States improves to 32-13.
For the second time in three days, the Falcons scored first. Matt Smith worked a full-count before drawing a walk, and then Derek Drewes moved him over to second with a sacrifice bunt. Bowling Green's next batter, Kory Brown, plated Smith with a single up the box.
The Seminoles tied the game in the bottom of the second, however. Dylan Busby reached on an error, which also allowed him to advance to second base. Busby then stole second, and the throw trying to cut him down sailed into right field. Busby ran home on the play, tying the score at 1-1.
Matt Henderson then tripled for Florida State with only one out, but a failed squeeze play allowed the Falcons to get out of the inning with the game still tied at 1-1. Justin Mott threw the runner out at third, who was too far off the bag after the missed bunt. Lacinak then induced a fly out to center to end the inning.
In the third, Florida State took a 2-1 lead on a John Sansone home run. The ball was hit extremely high into the air, and landed just out of the reach of a leaping Smith in left field. In the fourth, Busby hit a solo home run, pushing Florida State's advantage to 3-1.
In the fifth, Florida State continued to tack on, due in part to another costly error. With a runner on third and one out, Lacinak fielded a ground ball. The runner on third was caught in between third and home, but a throwing error allowed him to score. The Seminoles next batter singled, giving the Seminoles a 5-1 lead.
Lacinak went out for the sixth, and was charged with one final run before Devin Daugherty entered, and left a couple of runners on base. Daugherty went on to toss a scoreless seventh, before Tony Landi pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
Logan Giddings recorded two hits for the second time this weekend, as he went 2-for 3. Brown, who knocked home the first run of the ballgame, and Greg Basalyga registered a hit apiece.
The Falcons will return to Steller Field to conclude the home portion of their schedule next week. Bowling Green will play a midweek game on May 11 versus Youngstown State, prior to taking on Kent State over May 13-15 in a crucial MAC series.
