BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Despite outshooting the Wildcats by a 35-23 edge, the Bowling Green hockey team (14-16-2, 12-12-1 WCHA) fell to Western Collegiate Hockey Association foe Northern Michigan (8-17-4, 6-12-3 WCHA) in a 3-0 final Friday night.

The Wildcats capitalized with the man advantage early in the game, as they clinched a 1-0 lead just 6:00 in with a 5-on-3 power play goal. Northern Michigan then extended its lead by a 2-0 margin with a gritty goal down low. A Wildcat fell at the goal line but managed to pass the puck out front and it was skillfully redirected in the slot, to close out the first period with a 2-0 lead.

Although the Falcons held an edge in shots on goal by a narrow 11-10 margin in the opening period, it was in the second stanza that the Bowling Green offense really exploded. The Falcons hammered Northern Michigan's goaltender Atte Tolvanen with an additional 16 shots on goal in the second period, just two shy of the team's season high. Tolvanen was able to shut down every one of the Bowling Green offensive attacks, and the period closed out with the same 2-0 Wildcat lead, despite the Falcons significant advantage in shots on goal by a 27-17 mark.

There were several critical scoring chances throughout the game generated by senior Matt Pohlkamp who led the team with seven shots on goal, and senior captain Sean Walker, who marked five shots on goal. There was also sophomore Stephen Baylis, who midway through the second period took a big hit, but quickly recovered and was able to make back-to-back rebound shots in the slot. The attempts led to a total of five shots on the night for Baylis.

The Falcon defense was able to hold Northern Michigan off and only allowed one shot on goal to the Wildcats through the first 11:00 minutes of the third period. Northern Michigan ultimately scored its third goal on an empty net with just 52.9 seconds remaining in regulation.

On the night, junior goaltender Chris Nell tallied 20 saves and a .913 save percentage on the night. Bowling Green held the advantage in shots on goal by a 35-23 margin, and each team racked up eight blocked shots defensively. The Falcons went 0-for-3 on the power play, while Northern Michigan went 1-for-3, making it the first time since Jan. 14 that Bowling Green has sacrificed a power play goal.

The Bowling Green hockey team will be back in action tomorrow as it hosts the Wildcats in the series finale at the Slater Family Ice Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m.
