EMERSON, Ga. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team erased a 2-0 deficit, and secured a come-from-behind victory over Georgia State by earning a 6-3 victory on Sunday (March 12) afternoon. The game was played at the LakePoint Sports Complex in Emerson, Georgia.
With the victory, Bowling Green improves to 4-10 on the season. Bowling Green concluded their annual spring trip by winning three of its final four ballgames. Georgia State drops to 8-7 with the loss.
"I am very proud with how we rebounded on this trip," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "It would have been easy to hang our heads after starting this thing the way we did. But, instead, we won three of these last four games, and now have some momentum. I think we continue to get better each game, which is what you want to see heading into conference play at the end of the month. I'm excited to get back to The Stell next week!"
After Georgia State scored two runs on two hits to take a 2-0 lead in the second, the Falcons won the ballgame with a four-run fourth inning. Randy Righter, Logan Giddings and Cam Daugherty started the rally with three-consecutive singles to load the bases. R.J. Williams then drew a walk to get Bowling Green on the board.
Georgia State cut down a Falcon runner at the plate for the first out of the inning, but Jake Wilson tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI ground out. Nick Glanzman then set down a bunt, but the pitcher threw it away, allowing two more runs to cross the plate.
In the bottom of the eighth, after Georgia State pulled within a single run by scoring a run in the top of the sixth, Bowling Green scored some important insurance runs. The inning started with Jeff Scott being hit by a pitch. He quickly advanced to third when Justin Mott reached base on an error. Wilson proceeded to score Scott with a double, marking his second RBI of the ballgame. Glanzman gave BGSU a 6-3 advantage with a sacrifice fly that scored Mott.
Zac Carey got the start for Bowling Green, and earned his first win of the season by turning in a quality start. In his 6.0 innings of work, the right-hander allowed five hits, while striking out four batters and walking none. All three of the runs that he allowed were unearned.
Kody Brown relieved Carey, and tossed a perfect seventh inning. He then recorded two more outs in the eighth, and finished his outing by not surrendering a hit over 1.2 innings. He struck out two and walked one.
Landi notched the last out of the eighth, and recorded his second save of the season by hurling a scoreless ninth. A runner reached on an error, but he set down the next two Georgia State batters to secure the 6-3 victory.
Both teams recorded three errors. The Falcons scored their six runs on six hits, while Georgia State recorded five hits and three runs.
Bowling Green will host Findlay for its home opener on Tuesday (March 18). The ballgame is scheduled for a 3:05 p.m. first pitch from Steller Field. The Falcons will then welcome Niagara to Steller Field for a three-game weekend series, beginning on March 17.
