BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team played its first two home games of the season on Sunday (March 19), but Niagara University won both games of the doubleheader, which was played at Steller Field. The Purple Eagles won the first game, 3-1, before taking the second game by a score of 3-2.
With the pair of losses, Bowling Green falls to 4-12 on the 2017 season. Niagara, with the doubleheader sweep, improves to 9-7.
"We've continued to talk about, but we just haven't been able to play well enough in the three phrases," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "In almost all of our losses this season, we've had two of the three phases go well for us, but the third has been terrible. Today, it was the same thing. We had great pitching, and our defense was solid, but our bats just didn't show up. We have to have a very short memory, as we play on Tuesday, and then open up conference play on the weekend."
Bowling Green received two solid starts in both games, and the bullpen was tremendous throughout the entire day. In fact, the BGSU bullpen combined for 6.2 innings, and allowed just four hits, zero runs, and struck out eight batters while walking four batters.
In the first game, Tyler Anderson battled through 5.0 innings, and allowed three runs. He did a good job of scattering eight hits and two walks. He faced 25 batters, and also registered two strikeouts. Chase Antle was the first pitcher out of the bullpen, and he went on to toss a scoreless sixth, picking up a strikeout in the process.
Brad Croy relieved Antle, and was phenomenal. He struck out five batters over 2.2 frames, and he surrendered just one hit. Kody Brown faced one batter, and quickly retired him.
Bowling Green was out-hit, 10-3, in the first ballgame. Senior Greg Basalyga registered all three hits, as he went 3-for-4. Basalyga carried the offense the entire day. In the second game, he went 1-for-3 with a walk.
Zac Carey logged 6.1 innings, and allowed three runs in the second game of the day. He struck out five, and walked one. He gave way to Nathan Lohmeier in the seventh inning.
Lohmeier pitched a full inning, allowing just one hit. Brown faced two batters in this game, and again, did not allow a base runner. Tony Landi recorded one scoreless frame in the defeat.
Bowling Green certainly had its chances in the second game, and nearly broke through in the seventh. With the bases loaded and only one out, Nick Glanzman was hit by a pitch, drawing BSGU within a single run at 3-2. However, Niagara brought on Matt McCuen, who got out of the mess by retiring the next two batters in succession.
McCuen registered the save in both wins for the Purple Eagles. Niagara out-hit the Falcons by a 7-4 margin in the second game.
Bowling Green will travel to Dayton to take on the Flyers on Tuesday (March 21) afternoon. The ballgame is scheduled for 3 p.m. start. Bowling Green will then open up Mid-American Conference play with a three-game series at Eastern Michigan, which will take place from March 24-26.Â
