BGSU Travels To Youngstown State Wednesday To Conclude Season Series
April 17, 2017 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team begins a four-game week with a Wednesday (April 19) afternoon game at Youngstown State University. The ballgame, which will be played YSU's Eastwood Field, is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. The game will wrap up a home-and-home season series between the Falcons and Penguins.
"Youngstown State has completely dominated us over the past few years, and we need to feel like that's not acceptable," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "They are a great program, and in-state rivalries are always important to us. Last weekend was very disappointing, but this is an opportunity to start a new week on a good note. We'll want to head into the conference weekend with some confidence."
On March 28, the Penguins traveled to Steller Field and picked up a 3-1 win. On that day, sophomore Joe McGuinness recorded BGSU's lone RBI, while freshman Chandler Stillings got the start and allowed one run over 4.2 innings. Over 2.0 innings and 2.1 innings, respectively, freshmen Damon Egnor and Nathan Lohmeier pitched in relief for the Falcons, allowing one run apiece.
With its win over Bowling Green in March, Youngstown State now holds a 9-3 advantage in the all-time series. The Penguins have won seven-straight games over the Falcons, and have earned two-game season sweeps in both 2015 and 2016. Bowling Green will be in search of its first win over Youngstown State since April 17, 1996.
Last week, Bowling Green earned its first regular-season win over Kent State since 2014. The 9-3 victory at Steller Field on April 11 was a non-conference showdown. However, the Falcons were swept over the weekend at Ball State to fall to 9-22 (4-8 MAC) on the season.
Junior Justin Mott continues to lead the Falcons with a .300 batting average, while senior Greg Basalyga is hitting .295, and is tops on the team with 20 RBI, four home runs, and a .484 slugging percentage. Junior Randy Righter has recorded at least one hit in 11 of Bowling Green's last 12 games. Righter is hitting .292 with 10 RBI.
Youngstown State hosts Kent State on Tuesday (April 18), but the Penguins are currently 9-23 in 2017. Youngstown State is 5-10 in Horizon League play. YSU is hitting .252 as a team, led by Andrew Kendrick's .313 average, 33 RBI and 14 home runs. The YSU pitching staff owns a 7.22 team ERA. Teams are hitting .320 off YSU pitching.
The Falcons welcome Central Michigan to Steller Field this weekend for a three-game series, starting with a 3:05 p.m. first pitch on Friday, April 22. The Saturday (April 23) and Sunday (April 24) games are set to begin at 1:05 p.m.
