BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team scored three runs in the second inning, and held Miami University to just six hits, as the Falcons avoided the weekend sweep by defeating the RedHawks, 3-1, Sunday (April 30) afternoon at Steller Field. The win was head coach Danny Schmitz's 690th at BGSU, which moves him into second place by himself for most wins as a MAC head coach.
Schmitz surpassed Joe Carbone with the victory. Carbone, who coached at Ohio University from 1989-2012, registered 689 wins as the Bobcats' head coach. The only head coach with more wins as a MAC head coach than Schmitz is Fred Decker, who picked up 791 wins from 1976-2004 at Western Michigan University.
Bowling Green improves to 11-28, and 6-12 in the Mid-American Conference with the victory. Miami, with the loss, falls to 19-26 (5-10 MAC).
"This was a must win for us, and we played a complete game, and picked up the win," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "Our pitching was great, and our defense was just as good. We had the one big inning, and we made sure that it held up. Overall, we wanted to win the series, but I'm happy that our kids didn't give up, and earned a win.
"We'll need to just take things one game at a time. Our team will focus on finals next week, and we will also be sure that we are doing everything that we need to do in order to get ready for a big series at Ohio next weekend."
Sophomore right-hander Chase Antle picked up the win for the Falcons, and was extremely dominant over 5.0 innings. Antle allowed four hits and one run, and struck out a career-high eight batters. His previous career high for strikeouts in a game was five. Antle left runners on second base with third-out strikeouts in each of the first two innings.
Miami scored a run in the fifth, but with runners at second and third, Antle left the tying run on base with a weak ground out to second. The righty recorded two strikeouts the first, third and fourth. Over his last four outings, which includes two starts and a total of 10.0 innings, Antle has recorded 15 strikeouts, while allowing just three walks, seven hits and one run.
Senior Tony Landi turned in his best outing of the season in relief of Antle. He retired the first eight batters he faced, and went on to hurl 3.2 innings of two-hit ball. He did not record a strikeout, but also did not issue a walk. He set down the first batter in the ninth, but then allowed a single.
Junior southpaw Kody Brown then entered the game to face the left-handed hitting Brooks Urich. Brown needed just one pitch to induce a game-ending, 4-6-3 double play. The Falcons scored all three of their runs in the second inning.
Junior Randy Righter started the frame with a leadoff double that hit the left-field fence on one hop. Senior Greg Basalyga was then hit by a pitch. With one out, both runners moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Junior Justin Mott delivered with an RBI single that was hit into center field. With runners on the corners, redshirt-sophomore Jeff Scott doubled down the third-base line, plating Basalyga. A wild pitch allowed Mott to score, giving BGSU a 3-0 lead.
Righter went 2-for-4 with a run and two doubles. Mott tied his career high, and established a season high with a three-hit performance. He went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI. Freshman Jake Wilson, junior Derek Drewes, and seniors Basalyga and Nick Glanzman also added hits for the Falcons.
Bowling Green does not play a midweek game this week, due to the fact that final exams are taking place at the University. The Falcons will travel to Athens over the weekend for a three-game series at Ohio, which takes place from May 5-7.
