Columbus, Ohio. – The No. 15 ranked Bowling Green State University hockey team defeated the No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes in game one of their home-and-home series by a decisive 8-2 final in the Schottenstein Center in Columbus on Friday night. The Falcons scored eight times on 28 total shots on goal. Sophomore Max Johnson tallied his first career hat trick scoring three power play goals in the contest. Freshman forward Alex Barber would score his first career goal for the Orange and Brown. Senior captain Stephen Baylis would score a five on three shorthanded goal late in the game to complete the scoring for Bowling Green. He is just the second player in school history to do so. With this win, the Falcons collect their first victory over a top 10 ranked team since Mar. 11, 2012 when Bowling Green defeated No. 2 ranked Ferris State in the CCHA Tournament 4-3. The second game of the series will take place on Saturday (Oct. 27) night in Slater Family Ice Arena at 7:07pm.

Scoring Plays

Max Johnson opened the scoring for the Falcons a little over two minutes into the first period with a deflection in front of OSU goaltender Tommy Nappier. Assists would go to Stephen Baylis and Alec Rauhauser.
Less than two minutes later at 4:13 into the game, Lukas Craggs would put Bowling Green up by two. Taylor Schneider would pick up the assist.
John Schilling scored the Falcons' third shorthanded goal of the season to make it three to nothing. Stephen Baylis and Tim Theocharidis would pick up assists. This was Baylis and Schilling's second shorty in two games.
Max Johnson would score his second power play goal of the evening to give the Falcons a four goal lead in the first period. He would be assisted by Connor Ford and Alec Rauhauser.
Early in the second period, Cameron Wright would score his third goal of the season on the power play. He would be assisted by Chris Pohlkamp and Tim Theocharidis.
Falcon freshman Alex Barber would score his first career goal to put the Falcons up six 7:04 into the second. He was assisted by Casey Linkenheld.
17:06 into the second period, Max Johnson would complete his first career the hat-trick. Bowling Green's second of the season. He was assisted by Brandon Kruse and Alex Rauhauser.
Ohio State would break the shutout mid-way through the third period as Mason Jobst scored. He was assisted my Carson Meyer and Freddy Gerard.
The Buckeys would put up another 6:54 into the third with a quick strike on the power play. John Wiitala would score with Gustaf Westlund and Gordi Myer on the assists.
Stephen Baylis would score a five on three shorthanded goal 11:37 into the third. He is just the second player in school history to score a five on three shorthanded goal. BGSU alumnus Dan Bylsma scored the other.

Falcon Stat Facts

Bowling Green has now scored three shorthanded goals on the season.
The Falcon have outscored their opponents by a total of 34 to 10.
The Falcons collect their first win over a top 10 or top five ranked opponents since the 2011-2012 season when they defeated No. 2 Ferris State in the CCHA Tournament.
Max Johnson scored his first career hat trick bringing his point total to 12 on the season.
Stephen Baylis' five on three shorthanded goal was just the second ever in school history. Dan Bylsma scored the first.

Coach Bergeron's Take

"Really happy to have a really good strong road effort and come out with the result."
On special teams, "We really take pride in our special teams. I would say I didn't like a couple of the penalties in the third that we took, but overall I thought our power play was doing what they've been doing. I was happy with the way we executed on special teams for sure."
When asked about tonight's result affecting the physicality of game two, "I'm not expecting any different than what I was expecting tonight quite honestly. It's going to be game two of a series. We haven't really done back-to-back nights with a series yet this year. I'm expecting a regular season Friday night, Saturday night series. There will be a lot of energy in the building tomorrow. I think we all know that."

Bowling Green returns to Slater Family Ice Arena for game two of their home-and-home series against Ohio State on Saturday (Oct. 27) night. Puck drop will be at 7:07pm. The Falcons will then be off until their home series versus Northern Michigan next weekend (Nov. 2, 3).
