BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team defeated Ohio University by a score of 3-1 on Sunday (March 25) afternoon at Steller Field. The win, which gave the Falcons the series victory over the Bobcats, also marked win No. 700 for BGSU Head Coach Danny Schmitz.
Schmitz is the Mid-American Conference's all-time leader in active wins. Schmitz is just the second baseball coach in MAC history to reach 700 wins. Fred Decker (1976-2004) won 791 games at Western Michigan.
Schmitz currently sits third all-time in MAC wins with 364. He needs just five more conference wins to surpass Joe Carbone (1989-2012), who won 368 MAC games at Ohio. Decker leads the way with 401 conference wins.
"Winning 700 games is a product of having good players and good assistant coaches," said Schmitz after the win. "Bowling Green State University is a very special place. I'm extremely fortunate to continue to be around so many great people. We played great baseball this weekend, and more than anything, I'm happy for our guys for opening up MAC play with a series win."
Prior to this season, Bowling Green last won its MAC opening series in 2011. In 2011, BGSU took two games at Northern Illinois to open up the conference slate.
The Falcons are scheduled to play at Fort Wayne on Wednesday, before returning to Steller Field for a three-game series with Eastern Michigan, beginning March 30.
STARTING FAST
• In all three games on the weekend, the Falcons scored first, and did so in the first inning.
• Today was no exception, as Randy Righter gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead with a base hit into left field. Neil Lambert scored from third, and after the left fielder bobbled the ball, Jeff Scott was also able to score on the play.
• Lambert started the frame with a double to left field, and then Scott drew a walk.
ANDERSON AND BROWN SHUT DOWN OHIO
• Right-hander Tyler Anderson got the start for the Falcons, and was tremendous. He earned the win by allowing just one run over 5.2 innings. He struck out four, and only issued one walk.
• Brown completely dominated Ohio the rest of the way, as he pitched 3.1 innings of hitless baseball.
• The southpaw struck out three, and walked just one. Brown also earned the save on Friday, while he picked up the win in Wednesday's walk-off win over Dayton.
PLAY OF THE GAME
• In the fifth inning, with Bowling Green leading by a score of 2-0, Ohio put runners on second and third with two outs.
• The Ohio batter slowly chopped a ball towards pitcher Tyler Anderson. Anderson got a piece of his glove on the ball, changing the ball's path.
• Third baseman Cam Daugherty, who was charging on the way, then had to change direction, before making a do-or-die barehanded play. He fielded the ball cleanly, and fired over to first to get the runner by the slimmest of margins.
• The incredible play got BGSU out of the jam. If the play was not made, Ohio would have scored a run, and had the tying run on third base.
BIG INSURANCE RUN
• After Daugherty's huge play, Bowling Green put runners on the corners with two outs.
• Justin Mott started off the inning with a bunt single. Ty Suntken then moved him over to second with a sacrifice bunt. Neil Lambert was then hit by a pitch, before Jeff Scott grounded into a fielder's choice.
• That brought up Brad Croy. With two strikes on Croy, the right-handed hitting designated hitter lined a ball into right field, scoring Mott to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead.
