>>FALCONS ON TAP
- The No. 12 (No. 8 in USA Today poll) ranked Bowling Green State University hockey team will face off with the Beavers of Bemidji State University this weekend for a two game series in Slater Family Ice Arena.
- The Falcons and Beavers will face-off for game one on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 7:37 pm, and then again the following night on Friday, Jan. 4 at 7:37 pm.
- This is the first of two regular season series scheduled between these two teams for the 2018-19 season, as the Falcons will travel to Bemidji in late February.
>>VERSUS BEMIDJI STATE
- All-time, Bowling Green holds a 12-7-2 lead over Bemidji State.
- This will be the first of two series between the Falcons and Beavers during the 2018-19 season as the Falcons will travel to Bemidji in late February. These squads only met once for a two game series during the 2017-18 season with Bowling Green taking the series with a win and a tie.
- Prior to last season, the pair of WCHA foes met six times during the 2016-17 season going 3-3 against one another. Bowling Green swept Bemidji State in the WCHA Tournament semi-final in addition to their two regular season series.
>>LAST TIME OUT
- Bowling Green enters this series on a three game winning streak, having swept their conference rival and third ranked team in the nation, Minnesota State. This was Bowling Green's final series prior to the holiday break (Dec. 14-15). BGSU won both games by final scores of 4-1.
- The Mavericks would get on the board first in game one (Dec. 14) before the Falcons would roar back to score three unanswered power play goals. Two of these goals were off the stick and side of Connor Ford who led the way for Bowling Green. Brandon Kruse would join Ford scoring on a power play between his two. Stephen Baylis would add an empty net goal to seal it for the Falcons.
- The Falcons got after them early in game two of the series (Dec. 15) with Tim Theocharidis and Lukas Craggs finding the back of the net in the first period. Craggs would notch one more on the night to tally his second multi-goal game on the season. Following a Minnesota State goal, Taylor Schneider would add one more to insure the game for Bowling Green.
- With this sweep, Bowling Green surpassed Minnesota State in the WCHA standings to sit alone in second place. This was the first time the Mavericks had been swept in five years.
- The Falcons then opened the second half of their season by defeating Windsor in an exhibition game on Sunday (Dec. 30) afternoon by a final score of 7-3.
- The Falcons and Lancers would battle to a 2-2 tie by the end of the second period. Following a brief Windsor lead, the Orange and Brown would respond with five unanswered goals in the third period to net the final result.
- Bowling Green would use all three goaltenders in the exhibition as Bowling Green native Brett Rich would see his first career ice time for the Falcons. This game also saw the return of senior forward John Schilling who has been sidelined with an injury since the beginning of November.
>>STATISTICAL STANDOUTS
- Bowling Green's sweep of No. 3 Minnesota State has created an extremely close race for the WCHA regular season championship with the top three teams separated by one point each. The Falcons hand the Mavericks their first sweep in five seasons.
- Including their series victories over Western Michigan and Ohio State, Bowling Green now holds a 5-0-1 record against top 20 competition this season. The Falcons have outscored those opponents 28-9.
- This is believed to be Bowling Green's first sweep of a top 3 opponent since the weekend of Feb. 7-8, 1992 when the Falcons swept No. 1 Michigan in a home-and-home series. That '92 team would win a series against No. 3 Michigan State the following weekend by beating and tying the Spartans.
- The Falcons are seventh in the nation in team offense posting a goals-per-game average of 3.68, and have outscored opponents thus far 70 to 33. BGSU currently has two of the top ten scorers in college hockey with Brandon Kruse tied for fifth and Max Johnson tied for tenth.
- Bowling Green kept pace defensively sitting second place in team defense with a goals-against-per-game-average of 1.74. The BGSU penalty kill unit stays impressive at seventh overall in the nation.
- Lukas Craggs scored two goals on five shots in game two against Minnesota State (Dec. 15). This was his second multi-goal game of the 2018-19 campaign, and the fifth of his career. Craggs continues to lead the Falcons in goals with 12, and he is third in points with 16. Lukas Craggs also leads the team in the plus/minus column at +17. His efforts in the series sweep of Minnesota State won him WCHA Forward of the Week honors (Dec. 17).Â
- The Bowling Green Falcon power play unit struck for three goals against the Mavericks. Two of those goals were scored by Connor Ford in game one (Dec. 14). Ford is now tied with Max Johnson for the most man advantage goals on the team at six each.
>>NATIONALLY RANKED
