Hays And Antle Combine For 18-Strikeout Shutout In Win Over Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team concluded its series at Belmont University on Saturday (March 2) with a doubleheader split. After dropping the first game of the afternoon by a score of 12-3, the Falcons earned a 1-0 victory in the second game of the twin bill.

Adam Furnas and Riley Minorik led the offense in the first game of the day. Furnas went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI, while Minorik went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Andrew Abrahamowicz earned a no-decision after giving the Orange and Brown 5.0 solid innings of two-run ball. David Stopp logged 1.2 shutout innings, striking out four.

The second game was highlighted by a historic pitching effort from freshman Tyler Hays and redshirt-junior Chase Antle. The pair of Falcons combined for an 18-strikeout shutout. Joe McGuinness' RBI single with two outs in the seventh inning proved to be the only run scored in the ballgame.

Hays went 7.0 innings to earn the first win of his collegiate career. The freshman allowed just two hits and surrendered only one walk. Hays stuck out the side in the seventh to put a cap on his day. Antle then came into the ballgame to start the eighth, and proceeded to record all six outs via the strikeout. The 2.0-inning save marked the second save of his career.

The victory for Bowling Green's marked the program's first shutout win since a 5-0 win over Army on March 10, 2017. Bowling Green's 18 strikeouts fell just three away from tying the school record. The Falcons posted 21 strikeouts versus Toledo on April 29, 1961.
