Box Score
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated by Ball State University, 4-2, Friday (April 26) afternoon. The Mid-American Conference series opener was played at Ball Diamond At First Merchants Ballpark Complex in Muncie, Indiana. A three-run third inning for the Cardinals proved to be the difference in the ballgame.
Bowling Green was matched up against a potential first-round pick in Ball State's right-handed pitcher Drey Jameson. Jameson picked up the win, firing 7.0 innings of one-run ball. BGSU forced Jameson to throw 116 pitches, but fellow righty Nick Floyd came on to earn the two-inning save.
BGSU loaded the bases in the top of the eighth, putting the tying run on first base with one out in a 4-1 game. Neil Lambert nearly singled up the middle, but a nice play by the BSU second baseman allowed the Cardinals to get an out at second base. The Cardinals then pitched out of the jam to preserve their 4-2 lead.
Andrew Abrahamowicz took the tough-luck loss. After nearly getting out of the third inning with just one run in, Ball State's Ross Messina hit a two-run home run. BGSU's Friday starter had just induced a double play the at-bat prior. In total, Abrahamowicz logged 7.0 innings, striking out four while not issuing a single walk.
Bowling Green took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, as Dylan Dohanos scored Ryan Johnston with a single up the middle. Johnston battled back in his at-bat in the frame to work a one-out walk. He then moved to second on a wild pitch. Jeff Scott led the Falcons with two hits on the afternoon.
The Falcons also received hits from Jake Wilson, Brad Croy and Adam Furnas. Jeremy Spezia pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Spezia entered the game with runners on first and second and no outs. After an error loaded the bases, the right-hander induced two fly outs and a strikeout to get out of the inning unscathed.
COACH SCHMITZ QUOTE
"I thought today was a really-well played college baseball game on both sides. Jameson was as advertised for Ball State. He's a dynamic arm and had everything working today. Our guys battled to get into the bullpen, and a couple of nice defensive plays kept us off the board. We will regroup and get ready for game two."
