MUNCIE, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team, for the second-straight day, lost an extremely well-played ballgame to the Ball State University Cardinals. Ball State escaped with a 3-2 victory on Saturday (April 27) afternoon at Ball Diamond At First Merchants Ballpark Complex. The Mid-American Conference game was the middle game of the weekend series.
Ball State's Ross Messina hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth to give the Cardinals the win. The Falcons did not go quietly, however, loading the bases with only one out in the ninth. R.J. Williams and Riley Minorik started the frame with back-to-back singles. After a one-out hit by pitch loaded the bases, a 6-4-3 double play ended the game in heartbreaking fashion for the Falcons.
The Cardinals scored two runs in the top of the first, but the Falcons battled back throughout the contest. Joe McGuinness worked a walk with the bases loaded in the second, before Brad Croy tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Tyler Hays was fantastic for the Orange and Brown on the mound. Hays ended his day by putting up five-consecutive zeros after surrendering the two runs in the first. The freshman scattered seven hits over 6.0 innings. He struck out six and only issued two walks.
Ball State's John Baker, another expected high draft pick, surrendered his earned run over 6.0 innings. BGSU drew four walks from Baker and scored one run on three hits. Baker had nine strikeouts. Brendan Burns, who picked up the win for BSU, logged 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball.
Jake Wilson led the Falcons offensively with a 2-for-3 day. Minorik, Williams and Neil Lambert also recorded hits for Bowling Green. Wilson got on base four times, as he also coaxed a walk and was hit by a pitch. Jeremy Spezia was stuck with the loss, but still worked 2.0 innings while notching two punch outs.
COACH SCHMITZ QUOTE
"This was another really-well played college baseball game. We've been in a ton of close games recently, and we've been a little bit snake bitten not to have earned more bounces. Our guys played incredibly hard again today against a really good team. Tyler Hays pitched his butt off and our offense put a lot of pressure against another electric arm. Ball State found a way to win, so you have to give them a lot of credit."
