BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team picked up a 12-8 victory over the University of Dayton Flyers on Wednesday (April 3) afternoon at Steller Field. With the win, Bowling Green moves to 7-1 on the campaign at home.
Â
The Falcons jumped on Dayton right away, scoring seven runs over the first two innings – including a five-run first – to take a 7-0 lead. BGSU went on to score one run in the fifth, before a pair of two-run frames in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Â
Dayton plated three in the fourth inning, and then a three-run home run in the seventh capped a four-run frame. Dayton scored the final run of the ballgame in the eighth, but the Flyers were never able to get within two runs after BGSU's big start.
Â
Mike Malewitz, Dylan Dohanos and Jake Wilson – Bowling Green's top three batters in the lineup – each had three hits. Malewitz and Dohanos had two RBI, while Wilson drove in one run. Brad Croy's two-RBI single in the first allowed him to finish the contest with two RBI.
Â
Nick Neibauer scored two runs and added an RBI. Bowling Green's other hits were recorded by Neil Lambert, Anthony Smith, Gama Martinez and Ty Suntken. The Falcons recorded 14 hits in the game, and held the Flyers to just five hits.
Â
Gage Schenk picked up his second win in as many weeks, as the freshman hurled 2.0 hitless innings and posted three punch outs. Schenk started and was credited with the victory due to being on a pitch count. Damon Egnor tossed a scoreless third, and did not surrender a hit. Jeremy Spezia blanked Dayton over the final 1.2 innings of play to earn his third save of the season.

COACH SCHMITZ QUOTE
"We did a great job of setting the tone. Gage Schenk threw the ball really well, and our offense put together a lot of quality at-bats early on to give us that 7-0 lead. Give our defense credit, as well. We played great team defense on a really windy day. We are looking forward to another conference weekend coming up at Eastern Michigan. We will need to bring our 'A' game."
