Hockey Returns To Home Ice This Weekend To Host Alaska Anchorage

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University hockey team returns to the Slater Family Ice Arena this weekend to take on Alaska Anchorage for the second series between the teams this season. The Falcons swept the Seawolves the first time around in Anchorage, picking up 3-1 and 3-0 wins.Â

Suiting Up Against The Seawolves
Alaska Anchorage will be the second consecutive opponent for the Falcons that is coming off a series against Minnesota State. The Seawolves held their own against the top team in the WCHA standings, nearly claiming a split. MSU took a 7-1 victory on Friday, but Saturday turned to a 2-2 tie between the teams with the Mavericks taking the win in overtime. The Seawolves are currently holding on to the last playoff spot in the WCHA, being eighth in the standings entering the weekend, despite being 0-3-2 over their last five games. Statistically, Alaska Anchorage has had a team approach this season in scoring. Both goals and points for the season are currently in three-way ties on the stat sheet while assists are being led by Tomi Hiekkavirta with 12 on the year.Â
The Series At A Glance
Meeting earlier this season in Alaska, the Falcons swept the Seawolves, scoring three goals in each victory. First meeting to start the 1988-89 season, the Orange and Brown have won 16 of the 22 matchups between the teams, including having swept UAA six times during the series. The 1988-89 series, being a sweep by Bowling Green, was the only non-conference series between the two teams before both joined the WCHA at the start of the 2013-14 season. The Falcons are 11-0-2-2 over the last 13 meetings against the Seawolves with the last loss coming during the 2015-16 season while picking up double-overtime wins during the 2016-17 and 2018-19 seasons.Â
Last Time Out
Going up against Bemidji State last weekend, the Falcons came up short in the series, being swept by the Beavers. Will Cullen highlighted the Bowling Green effort, scoring the lone goal on Friday and assisting on a goal Saturday. The Orange and Brown were also perfect on the power play on Saturday, scoring during their one power play opportunity. Freshman goalie Zack Rose also saw the ice for Saturday's game, marking his third appearance this season. In goal, Rose tallied a career-high 35 saves against Bemidji.Â
Around The WCHA
In the WCHA, Northern Michigan captured a sweep over Ferris State, winning 5-2 both Friday and Saturday to pick up six points. Bemidji also took both games from Bowling Green, but the other two series saw points given to both teams. As mentioned above, Alaska Anchorage took Minnesota State to a tie on Saturday, taking a point from the Mavericks. Additionally, Michigan Tech and Alabama Huntsville split the weekend series, seeing Tech win on Friday, 4-1, and Huntsville on Saturday, 3-1. This weekend two WCHA teams will be off, being Bemidji State and Ferris State.
Hauser For Hobey
After being scoreless for three games, Alec Rauhauser found his way back onto the stat sheet on Saturday night against the Beavers assisting on Cameron Wright's power play goal. The assist is Rauhauser's 19th of the season and 27th point, both team leads. Having 114 career points, 88 of them have been assists as Rauhauser nears joining another exclusive club, the 100 career assist group. Only 20 players in program history have reached the milestone and just five defensemen. Curtis Fry and Kelly Perrault were the most recent to reach the mark. Fry totaled 126 while Perrault had 103, both playing from 1993-97.
The Wright Power Play
Scoring a power play goal on Saturday night, Cameron Wright moved up to a tie for seventh in the nation for power play goals, having netted seven during the 2019-20 campaign. Wright is second on the team for power play goals, trailing Connor Ford who has eight. The goal also increased Wright's team lead for the category, now with 16 on the season, nearly doubling his previous career-high which was set at nine entering this season. His seventh power play goal also set a new career-high, previously being six during the 2017-18 season.Â
