No. 5 Falcons Ready For Final Non-Conference Series
January 19, 2021 | Ice Hockey
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The No. 5 Bowling Green State University hockey team will take part in a non-conference series against a WCHA team for the second consecutive weekend, traveling north to face Bemidji State. The Falcons and Beavers met just two weeks ago in a series that saw each team collect a win in two one-goal games. The Falcons will enter the series with a 14-2 record following a sweep over Northern Michigan while Bemidji State sits at 3-4-2 with their last series being against Bowling Green.
Â
Battling Bemidji AgainÂ
Just two weeks removed from their last matchup, the Falcons and Beavers will be back at it for two non-conference games. While Bowling Green played two games in the meantime, Bemidji had last weekend off now staring down the second leg of four straight against the Falcons. The last meeting saw two close contests between the teams with each being settled by just a goal difference. The last series saw Owen Sillinger lead the way for the Beavers, scoring the first Bemidji goal of both games. The other goal scorers in the series for Bemidji State were Brendan Harris, Eric Martin, Aaron Miller and Ethan Somoza.
The Games At A GlanceÂ
The last time these two teams met saw a series split at the Slater Family Ice Arena. The Falcons were able to capture the win on Friday night in a 3-2 final before the second game went to overtime on Saturday. Early in the overtime period Bemidji State scored to take a 4-3 win for the split. Brandon Kruse paced the Falcons in the series with two goals while the Orange and Brown's fourth line of all freshmen all combined for a score in the second game. In net, Eric Dop started both games for the Falcons, going 1-1 on the weekend, totaling 63 saves over the two-game set.Â
Last Time Out
Bowling Green came away with a pair of wins following last weekend's series against Northern Michigan. The two wins helped the Falcons capture the program's 1,000th win all-time. In total, 16 different players logged at least one point over the course of the series, including an assist for goalie Eric Dop. Both Dop and Zack Rose started a game against Northern Michigan with each picking up a win. In terms of scoring it was Will Cullen that led the way with five points in the series, leading to him being the WCHA Defensemen of the Week. He was followed closely by both Max Johnson and Cameron Wright who each registered four points over the course of the series. Five other Falcons were able to log two points as well.Â
The Millennium FalconsÂ
With their 14th win of the 2020-21 season, Bowling Green became the 26th program in the country to reach 1,000 wins all-time. In addition to being the 26th program to hit the milestone, the Falcons are just the third program to do so that began after World War II. Needing just 2,011 games to reach the milestone the Falcons have accumulated a 1,000-863-148 in program history for a .534 winning percentage.Â
Cullen Coasting To Nation Lead
This past weekend Will Cullen totaled five points for the Falcons en route to being named the WCHA Defensemen of the Week. The five points brings Cullen's season total to 16, which is the most points among defensemen in the country while being fourth for points per game among defensemen. Cullen's 12 assists also leads the Falcons and clocks in at a tie for 26th in the nation overall and tied for fourth for total assists on the year.Â
Dop, Rose Continue Historic PaceÂ
Both Eric Dop and Zack Rose have had incredible seasons thus far with both being in the Top 15 in the nation for most goalie statistics. Beginning with Goals Against Average, Zack Rose is putting up a 1.44 mark that slates in at fourth in the nation. Eric Dop isn't far behind at 2.00 for 14th. The success carries into save percentage where Rose is ninth in the nation, registering a .935 percentage. Again, Dop trails closely at 12th and a percentage of .931. They both are in the Top 10 for winning percentage as well. Dop's 8-1-0 record (.899) is fourth while Rose at 6-1-0 (.857) comes in at seventh. If they can keep up the pace, both Dop and Rose could place their names in the BG Falcon Hockey record book by the end of the season.Â
