Box Score
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team put together a furious rally in the ninth inning, scoring three times and putting the tying run in scoring position, but the hosts Middle Tennessee State University Blue Raiders held on for a 5-3 win. The season-opening series is being played at MTSU's Reese Smith Jr. Field.
Bowling Green trailed by a score of 5-0 with two outs in the ninth inning, but nearly came all the way back. Kyle Gurney started the rally with a single. After Adam Furnas and Tyler Ross worked walks to load the bases, Tyler Haas was hit by a pitch to get the Falcons on the board. A throwing error scored two more runs and moved a pair of runners into scoring position, but a fly out ended the contest.
BGSU's defense played a clean game yet again, while the pitching staff no-hit the Blue Raiders over the final four frames. Griffin Parrill worked 2.1 innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen, while freshmen Landon Willeman and Peyton Wilson worked one scoreless inning apiece in their collegiate debuts.
In his first game of the season, infielder Adam Fallon led the Bowling Green offense with a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Jack Krause and Gurney also recorded hits on the day. Gurney, Furnas and Ross scored the three runs for the Orange and Brown.
The series finale is scheduled for Sunday (Feb. 28) at 2 p.m. EST.
COACH HALLOCK QUOTE
"We found a way to string some quality at bats together in the ninth by controlling the strike zone offensively and applying pressure by barreling up a couple baseballs. That approach and level of execution needs to be consistent throughout all nine frames. As we learn to put that together, our offense will get rolling and will be able to lead us.
Adam Fallon was very good today offensively. Our bullpen combination of Parrill, Willeman and Wilson performed at a high level. And again, our team defense gave us a chance to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth because we cut two runners down at home in first-and-third situations to kill momentum. It's time to bounce right back and be ready to go tomorrow."
