MURFRESSBORO, Tenn. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated by Middle Tennessee State University on Sunday (Feb. 28) by a score of 7-0. The Blue Raiders claimed all three games of the weekend series, which was played at MTSU's Reese Smith Jr. Field.
MTSU has played seven games already and is 5-2 on the campaign, while the Falcons took the field for the first time in 2021 on the weekend. Bowling Green is scheduled to be back in action next weekend at James Madison over March 5-7.
Middle Tennessee jumped out to a 5-0 lead by plating two in the third and three in the fourth. MTSU tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. The Blue Raiders notched 10 hits compared to BGSU's six. For the third-consecutive game, Bowling Green's defense turned in a clean performance.
Tyler Ross, Adam Furnas, Kyle Gurney and Jared Johnson recorded hits for the Orange and Brown. Nathan Rose and Robbie Peterson also picked up hits in pinch-hitting roles. Rose registered a hit in both games he appeared in on the weekend, while Ross added three hits in three games. Gurney hit .333 on the weekend, picking up at least one knock in all three ballgames.
Nathan Lohmeier struck out four batters and allowed just one earned run over 2.2 innings of relief work. David Stopp and Levi Gazarek combined for a perfect inning out of the bullpen. Stopp struck out one batter over 0.2 frames, while Gazarek struck out the only batter he faced.
COACH HALLOCK QUOTE
"For us to be successful, we have to improve on commanding the strike zone on both offense and defense. Offensively, we must keep the opposing pitchers in the zone better, then capitalize when we get a good pitch to hit. We fouled some pitches off that they put in play hard. As we build confidence in our approach, we will see the foul balls turn into big hits.
The consistent bright spots for us continue to be our team defense and bullpen. We played 3 full baseball games error free. This team has embraced the need to take care of the baseball -- then pass it down the line on the pitching staff to get late-inning outs. Building depth to finish off games this early in the season is something that will be important as we hit four-game weekends in March and beyond."
