HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team opened its three-game series at James Madison on Friday (March 5) with a 10-6 victory. The win marks the first for BGSU under head coach Kyle Hallock. The non-conference game was played at JMU's Veterans Memorial Park.
The win for Bowling Green is the program's first Friday non-conference win since a 9-7 triumph at SEMO on Feb. 23, 2018. Prior to today, BGSU last scored 10-plus runs in a Friday non-conference victory on Feb. 27, 2015 (13-10 at Eastern Kentucky).
The Falcons trailed by a score of 4-2 entering the seventh inning, but proceeded to score eight runs over the final three frames. Tyler Ross evened the game at 4-4 with a two-run RBI single in the seventh. The game really swung in BGSU's momentum when Jack Krause hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning. Krause's first-career home run, a line-drive bullet over the right centerfield fence, untied a 5-5 game and gave the Falcons the lead for good.
"It was a great team win tonight," said Krause. "Guys were stepping up all game, and I am glad I was able to step up big for the team."
Nathan Lohmeier picked up the win for the Orange and Brown. The second-career win for the senior came in relief, as the southpaw went the final 2.2 innings for the Falcons, striking out two and only allowing one run.
"Awesome to get Coach Hallock and the staff their first win," said Lohmeier. "Ryan Johnston made some great plays and Tyler Haas caught a great game tonight!"
Andrew Abrahamowicz turned in another strong performance, leaving the ballgame in line for the victory for the second time in as many starts. The right-hander allowed four runs over six innings. Abrahamowicz struck out five and did not issue a single free pass.
Ross went 3-for-5 and scored two runs to go along with his two RBI. Gurney and Haas each registered two hits. Johnston and Jared Johnson each went 1-for-4, while Krause scored two runs and drove in three on the three-run blast. BGSU will go for the series win tomorrow (March 6) with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
COACH HALLOCK QUOTE
"That win was for everyone associated with BGSU Baseball past and present. Tonight we saw the toughness and depth of our baseball team. We scored early and late offensively, which is a tribute to our guys ability to make in-game adjustments offensively. We got the lead off guy on base six times, which is one of our keys to success and we scored in five of those innings. Tyler Ross played a complete game and had great at-bats from the lead off spot. He was a tone setter and he's a catalyst for us.
"Jack Krause can do things that most people can't. Tonight he showed that offensively with the big homerun from the bottom of the lineup. I'm really happy Jack had that moment. It's a glimpse into the player we feel he can become. Andrew Abrahamowicz competed really well after taking a big shot from their offense in the first inning. His ability to grind, show some Lorain toughness and turn that into six innings is a big reason why he's a difference maker for this team. Nate Lohmeier is our bullpen anchor. He's the guy we want to put in close games with our fate in the balance. He's a senior with success and experience. He does everything correct. I'm proud of his ability to finish."
