Box Score
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team's offense exploded for 20 runs on 20 hits in a 20-6 Sunday (April 25) victory at Western Michigan University. The game lasted only seven innings due to the league's mercy rule. BGSU won the final two games of the series to earn the weekend split in the Mid-American Conference series. The four-game set was staged at WMU's Robert J. Bobb Stadium.
Bowling Green is 9-7 on the road in conference play in 2021. With the weekend split, the Falcons improve to 9-11 within the conference. WMU drops to 12-8 in league play.
The Falcons wasted no time on the afternoon, scoring eight runs in the second inning to take total control of the ballgame. BGSU added two runs apiece in both the fourth and fifth, before adding four-spots in the sixth and seventh innings. Eight of BGSU's nine starters recorded a hit. Anthony Ryan, the lone Falcon that didn't record a hit, was equally as impactful, totaling two walks, two RBI and three runs.
Adam Furnas led the offense with a huge 5-for-6 day at the plate. Furnas, who also scored three runs and registered five RBI, posted multiple hits in all four games. The native of Bowling Green hit .647 in the series with 11 hits and eight RBI. Fellow middle-of-the-order basher, Kyle Gurney, collected three hits and four RBI on the day. Gurney batted .471 on the weekend with six runs and six RBI.
Dylan Dohanos had at least one hit in all four games, ending the weekend at the dish with a 2-for-5 effort. Nathan Rose, who notched six hits over the last two days, went 3-for-6 in today's victory with three RBI. Ryan Johnston had three hits himself, going 3-for-3 with a walk and four runs scored. Adam Fallon, Anthony Toma and Andy Gaytan each had at least one hit and one run in the ballgame.
Freshman Peyton Wilson earned his first-career win in his first-career start, logging four innings before giving way to freshman Landon Willeman, who did not allow an earned run over 2.1 innings on the bump. Junior Joel Roediger struck out the final two batters of the contest to secure the win for the Orange and Brown.
COACH HALLOCK QUOTE
"Today was as strong of a finish to a weekend as we could hope for. Our offense strung a lot of quality at bats together in a row. They did a great job of resetting the scoreboard every single inning to 0-0 and playing from there. We saw a complete lineup from top to bottom today and that's a great sign heading into May with a lot of games coming up in short order. Adam Furnas was a monster this weekend. He's the guy in our lineup that can make people uncomfortable to pitch to and if our guys get on ahead of him, it's usually a good outcome for us. Kyle Gurney's weekend was right up there given his offensive production, but also his defensive performances. He squared up pitches that he handles well and kept our pitchers on task each of the last two games.
"Peyton Wilson, Landon Willeman and Joel Roediger were very efficient on the mound. They pitched fearless and were in attack mode, all while getting some extra outs along the way. Wilson gave up five hits with four of them being on the ground, so he was better than his stat line would indicate. Willeman had serious presence and took a big step forward, making clutch pitches in every type of count. Roediger's finish to the game was really good because he continues to deliver each time he gets the ball – no matter the situation."
