Falcons Club Three Homers To Complete Four-Game Sweep Of Miami
May 25, 2021 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team completed a four-game Mid-American Conference sweep on Tuesday (May 25) by defeating the Miami University RedHawks by a score of 9-7. The league ballgame was played at Steller Field at Gary Haas Stadium.
With the four wins, the Falcons earned a MAC sweep of Miami for the first time since 1995. The Falcons opened the series with a 7-1 win on May 4. BGSU clinched the series win with a doubleheader sweep on May 18, prior to moving to 15-21 in MAC play with today's victory.
The Bowling Green offense registered seven extra-base hits on the afternoon. Adam Furnas, Jack Krause and Kyle Gurney each clubbed home runs. Furnas' two-run shot gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Krause's solo blast inched BGSU's lead to 6-3 in the third, while Gurney's solo homer – which increased Bowling Green's advantage to 7-4 in the fifth – extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
Nathan Rose, Tyler Ross, Adam Fallon and Andy Gaytan all doubled for the Orange and Brown. Rose's two-bagger was a part of Bowling Green's decisive two-run eighth. After Rose gave BGSU an 8-7 lead, Ryan Johnston tacked on an important insurance run with a two-out single to left field.
Will MacLean earned his third save of the season by striking out two batters in the ninth. Andrew Abrahamowicz and Griffin Parrill contributed strongly out of the bullpen, as well. Abrahamowicz surrendered just one run over three frames, while Parrill logged a scoreless seventh inning.
The Falcons are set to conclude the 2021 season this weekend with a four-game series against Northern Illinois University over May 28-30. All games will be held at Steller Field at Gary Haas Stadium and will stream for free on YouTube.
COACH HALLOCK QUOTE
"Complete team win today to wrap up our series with Miami. I thought one of the keys to today was how we ran the bases. Adam Fallon's sequence of a hustle double, stealing third and then scoring was a huge spark for us. A lot of our guys took that next step base running wise and helped us generate offense. Furnas, Krause and Gurney's home runs all came at big spots in the game. As a whole we hit pitches we needed to hit all day and battled 1-9. Defensively, the L4-6 double play from Rose to Johnston when Abrahamowicz was pitching got us that zero we needed to get momentum in our dugout. After giving up some runs it was awesome to see us bounce back in that bottom half to score and regain the lead. It's a sign of our offense maturing and picking up our pitching/defense, which makes a great team. Andrew Abrahamowicz was very good. He got nasty a couple times in key spots. Then Will MacLean to end it with the save was electric. The ninth inning had all of the makings for a Hollywood drama and MacLean delivered the goods as the hero. All in all, I'm very happy for our players and how they competed."
