CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Bowling Green State University baseball program will continue the 2022 season this weekend with a three-game series against the Austin Peay Governors. The series is set to take place at Raymond C. Hand Park, the home of the Governors in Clarksville, Tenn. Preparing For Austin Peay
The Governors have four games under their belts after playing Boston College during the opening weekend and Southern Illinois earlier this week on Tuesday (Feb. 22). Austin Peay took two of three from Boston College, scoring 10 runs in the second game and 18 in the third game, however, it was a different story against Southern Illinois.
In the most recent game, the Governors were no-hit in a 10-0 final on the road against Southern Illinois. The Salukis used four pitchers over the course of the game to combine for the no-hitter. Austin Peay allowed a four-run fourth and a four-run sixth over the course of the game. The Governors cycled through six pitchers over the nine innings.
Against Austin Peay All-Time
Bowling Green and Austin Peay have played just once before, being during the 2002 season. The 10th game of the 2002 season, the Falcons took on the Governors on March 11, capturing a 16-7 win. The 16 runs were the most BGSU scored to that point in the season, a year the team went on to capture the MAC Championship with a league record of 18-7.
Last Time Out
The last time out the Falcons played a three-game series against Saint Louis in Hoover, Ala. to open the 2022 season. Bowling Green was able to capture wins in the first and third games of the series to begin the year 2-1.
The Falcons' bats entered the season red-hot, striking for 22 runs on opening day. The 22-run effort was the most runs by BGSU since the 2012 season and the most on opening day since 1985.
The momentum at the plate carried into the second game of the series for the Falcons, tallying eight runs, but the Billikens exploded for eight runs in the second inning that created a lead BGSU wasn't able to quite overcome, coming short in the 9-8 final.
Bowling Green came battling back in the third and final game of the series. A three-run second inning provided the Falcons an early lead while a two-run top of the ninth gave the necessary insurance to take a 5-4 victory.
Early Season Awards & Honors
Following the team's success in the first series of the season, Bowling Green was awarded two of the three weekly honors by the Mid-American Conference. Adam Furnas was named the MAC Baseball Player of the Week while Jeremy Spezia was a MAC Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week.
During the opening series against Saint Louis, Furnas showcased a strong bat. He began the season going 4-for-7 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored in the 22-8 win. He then belted his first home run of the season in the second game of the series, adding two more RBI to his weekend total. Furnas ended the series by going 2-for-4 while scoring once.
As for Spezia, he was electric out of the bullpen for BGSU. Spezia entered the first game and offered the Falcons four strong innings, allowing just two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out four. The effort allowed the Falcons to take a commanding lead en route to a 22-8 win with Spezia collecting the win on the mound. As for his second appearance of the weekend, Spezia entered in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, the bases loaded and the Falcons up just 5-4 in the series' third and final game. Spezia needed just three pitches to force the game-clinching out to secure the save, his first of the season and 10th of his career.
