Falcons Prep For Pair Of Midweek Matchups At Home

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team will look to open up the home schedule for the 2023 season this week, hosting both Purdue Fort Wayne and Youngstown State at Steller Field. The Falcons will first welcome the Mastodons to Bowling Green on Tuesday (March 21) before taking on the Penguins on Wednesday (March 22). Both games are set for 3 p.m. starts and will have an online radio broadcast.

Scouting Purdue Fort Wayne
Purdue Fort Wayne enters the midweek matchup with a 4-16 record, including a 1-2 standing within the Horizon League. The Mastodons are coming off a 1-2 weekend against Wright State with their win being a 12-10 final on Friday (March 17). Purdue Fort Wayne has also picked up wins over Austin Peay, Cornell and Alabama State. At the plate, the Mastodons are led by sophomore Jacob Walker who is hitting .333 with two doubles and six RBI. He's followed by senior Braedon Blackford batting .299 with five doubles, a triple, six home runs and 17 RBI.
Against the Mastodons All Time
The Falcons and Mastodons have played 17 times previously with Bowling Green holding the advantage, 12-5. BGSU has won three straight over Purdue Fort Wayne as well as six of the last seven. The last time these two teams faced off was the 2019 season, playing a home-and-home series. The Falcons won both games that year, winning at home 3-1 and on the road 10-4.
Scouting Youngstown State
Youngstown State will enter Wednesday's game with a 4-15 record, also being 1-2 within the Horizon League. The Penguins are coming off a series against Oakland, playing one game on Thursday (March 16) and two on Friday (March 17). YSU won Thursday's game 18-3, but lost both games of the Friday doubleheader. The other wins this year for Youngstown State have been against Memphis and two against Baylor. At the dish, the Penguins are paced by senior Braeden O'Shaugnessy, batting .333 with five doubles, three home runs and 12 RBI. Junior Trey Law is right there with him, hitting .355 with five doubles, seven RBI and 10 walks.

Like Purdue Fort Wayne, the Falcons have played the Penguins 17 times in program history but the results have gone the other way with Youngstown State leading the series 12-5. Despite the overall series leaning to Youngstown State, Bowling Green has won the last two matchups. In 2020, BGSU snagged a 2-1 win on the road and in 2019 the Falcons picked up a 15-5 victory at home. The pair of wins snapped a 10-game losing streak against the Penguins that stretched from 2007 until 2018.

Bowling Green snagged a win in Sunday's contest, taking a 5-4 victory in extra innings. DJ Newman singled to left and advanced to third on an error before scoring on a Jack Krause grounder for the winning run. Isaiah Seidel then closed the door in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win with his first save in the Orange and Brown.
