Strong Showings From Newman, Gurney Not Enough Against WMU's Two-Out Rallies

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team received a boost from the top of the order Friday (April 21) against the Western Michigan Broncos. DJ Newman and Kyle Gurney went a combined 5-for-8 with two walks and three runs scored from the top two spots in the batting order. Nathan Archer added a solo home run to the offensive effort, but it was WMU's two-out rallies that made the difference in the 6-4 final. The Falcons and Broncos are set to continue the series on Saturday (April 22) with a 1 p.m. scheduled first pitch.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In the top of the first, DJ Newman and Kyle Gurney singled to start the game, but Western Michigan was able to work out of the inning without damage.
In the third inning with one out, Newman and Gurney both singled again, putting runners at the corners for the Falcons. Sam Seidel laid down a drag bunt up the first base line, a sacrifice to score Newman and give BGSU the first run of the game and a 1-0 lead.
Western Michigan hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom half of the third and tallied another run later in the inning to take a 5-1 lead.
The Falcons' response came in the fifth inning. Newman walked followed by a Gurney single and another walk to Seidel to load the bases. Nathan Rose hit into a double play with Newman scoring to make it 5-2.
In the next at-bat, Nathan Archer took the first pitch he saw yard, going to deep right center for a two-run home run, cutting the score to 5-4 WMU.
Western Michigan added an insurance run with a solo home run in the eighth for a 6-4 tally.

FALCON STAT FACTS

Kyle Gurney singled in the top of the first to extend his on-base streak, now at 19 games. During the streak, Gurney is batting .429 (30-for-70) with 18 runs scored, 16 walks drawn, 15 RBI, four doubles and four home runs.
After laying down sacrifice bunts in both of his first two at-bats, Sam Seidel drew a walk in his third trip to the plate, extending his on-base streak to 13 games. Seidel has now reached in 28 of his 31 games played this season and in 25 of his 26 games started.
DJ Newman was a force at the top of the order for the Falcons, reaching in four of his five trips to the dish. Since moving into the leadoff role, Newman is batting .389 (7-for-18) with eight runs scored, seven walks drawn and four RBI.
With his fourth inning double, Tyler Ross pushed his hitting streak to seven games for the Falcons.
Nathan Archer continued his on-base streak with a home run in the fifth inning, now at seven games.
Leighton Banjoff drew two more walks for the Falcons. Over his last four games played, Banjoff now has six walks drawn.

The Falcons and Broncos will resume the weekend series on Saturday (April 22) with a 1 p.m. first pitch before concluding the series on Sunday (April 23) at the same time.
