BGSU Baseball to Host NIU In Final Home Series Of 2023

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team will host the Northern Illinois Huskies in the final home series of the 2023 campaign for the Falcons this upcoming weekend. The Falcons will also be recognizing the seniors of the 2023 team prior to Saturday's (May 13) game. BGSU and NIU are set for a three-game series, beginning Friday (May 12) at 3 p.m. before scheduled 1 p.m. starts on both Saturday and Sunday.

Scouting Northern Illinois
Northern Illinois is coming off a weekend series against Toledo, being swept by the Rockets. NIU has lost 14 of their last 15 games with the win coming against Milwaukee on May 3 by a score of 3-2. As for conference play, the Huskies hold a record of 4-19 against Mid-American Conference opponents. Their last conference victory came on April 14 in a 6-5 final against Western Michigan in 11 innings. NIU is led at the plate by Colin Summerhill, batting .301. Summerhill also leads the team in home runs (10), doubles (13) and RBI (46).
Against The Huskies All-Time
Entering the weekend series, the Falcons and Huskies have met 61 times, dating back to the 1968 season. Last season, BGSU and NIU split the season series that marked the end of the 2022 season. The four games were spread across two doubleheaders with the Falcons winning the first game followed by an NIU win in game two each. As for the last NIU trip to Steller Field, that came at the end of the 2021 season with the Orange and Brown winning three of four and outscoring the Huskies 23-15 over the course of the series.

DJ Newman got the start on the mound and gave up just four hits over four innings, striking out five with 42 strikes on 62 pitches. Newman also scored the lone road of the game for BGSU in the 5-1 loss with Tyler Ross recording the RBI on a bases loaded walk that pushed Newman across.

- Kyle Gurney is currently ninth in the all-time record book for career putouts with 757. The next step on the list will be passing Donny Schone with 833. Gurney is also four doubles away from entering the record book, needing 41 to tie Lee Morrison for 10th all-time in career doubles.
