Bowling Green Upends NIU to Start Weekend Series, 21-1
May 12, 2023 | Baseball
Bowling Green tallied a season-high 23 hits, including 11 base knocks in the 11-run third inning which set the tone. Every BGSU starter had at least one hit in the triumph as the Falcons platted runs in every inning but the fifth and eighth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- DJ Newman started the game with a single up the middle and stole second. He advanced to third on a Kyle Gurney flyout and scored on Tyler Ross' RBI single up the middle.
- BGSU scored two more in the second after Nathan Rose opened the frame with a single and Adam Fallon crushed a home run to right field.
- Kyle Gurney led off the decisive third inning with a single to center field. He later had a two-run double. Fallon also had a couple hits and three RBI in the frame to pace the Falcons. BGSU scored eight of the 11 runs with one out.
- The Falcons scored two more in the fourth on Ross' two-run double, scoring Gurney and Newman.
- Aaron Harper blasted a solo home run to center field in the top of the sixth for NIU's only run. It was NIU's second and final hit of the game.
- BGSU responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth on the back of Gavin Ganun's three-run blast after he came on in relief of Ross who left the game after a 4-for-4 performance.
- BGSU plated one more in the seventh inning when Justin Fugitt lined out to left field, scoring Leighton Banjoff.
"It was a great offensive day. We set the tone early in the first three innings with a lot of quality at bats. Gage Shenk was really good at the beginning of the game, and we took control early which we were hoping to do each game of the series. It was a great way to start the weekend, but tomorrow is a new day and we must come back ready to go." – Kyle Hallock, head baseball coach.
