Falcon freshman throws eight innings of 2-hit shutout ball & has 4 hits of his own
TOLEDO, Ohio – Freshman DJ Newman was dominant on the hill and at the plate on Thursday (May 18), as the Bowling Green State University baseball team blanked the arch-rival University of Toledo, 4-0. The game, the opener of a three-game Mid-American Conference series, was held at Scott Park.
In just his third collegiate start on the mound, Newman pitched a gem. He fired eight innings of shutout ball, allowing only two hits.
Newman was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate for the Falcons (19-29, 12-16 MAC), with a walk and a run scored.
Adam Fallon continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with a homer in the win. Tyler Ross and Nathan Archer also homered for the Orange and Brown.
All three round-trippers were leadoff homers. Ross began the second inning by taking Toledo (25-28, 13-15 MAC) starter Jack Walker deep for what would prove to be the only run BGSU would need.
Archer hit the first pitch of the fourth inning over the right-field fence to double the Falcons' lead, and Newman singled, moved to second on Sam Seidel's sac bunt and came around to score on a Kyle Gurney triple in the fifth.
Fallon capped the scoring by beginning the ninth inning with a solo shot to right.
The Rockets got an infield single in the first, and put two on with one out in the third. Newman, however, then proceeded to retire the next 17 Rockets before giving way to Connar Penrod.
Newman faced just three batters over the minimum, walking two and striking out a career-high eight.
Penrod got a routine grounder to third for the first out, then froze the next batter for a called third strike. The next UT hitter, Garret Pike, reached on a two-out infield error, ending a streak of 19-straight batters retired by BG pitching. But, Penrod responded by throwing a game-ending third strike past Rocket cleanup hitter Mason Sykes.

NOTE OF THE DAY: DJ ON THE HILL
• Freshman DJ Newman, as mentioned, had a stellar day both at the plate and on the mound on Thursday. He shattered his career bests for innings pitched and strikeouts, with eight of each.
• Newman has pitched 28 1/3 innings this season, and has struck out 33 batters while walking just five.
BONUS NOTE OF THE DAY: DJ AT THE PLATE
• DJ Newman had four hits on the day, single-handedly topping Toledo's total and tying his own career best. Newman was a perfect 4-for-4 on Thursday.
• The Archbold native has played two career games vs. the Rockets, and is batting .800 (8-for-10) in those two games. He was 4-for-6 with a double and two runs scored in the teams' first 2023 meeting, on April 26.
A THIRD NOTE OF THE DAY: FALLON ON FIRE
• Senior Adam Fallon continued his hot hitting on Thursday. Fallon, the reigning MAC Player of the Week, was 3-for-4 with a homer vs. the Rockets.
• Over the last four games, Fallon is hitting .769, having gone 10-for-13. He has an on-base percentage of .813 and a slugging pct. of 1.615 in that time, with three walks, a double, two triples and a pair of homers in those four games.
BG-UT: HOW IT HAPPENED
• Each pitcher faced the minimum three batters in the first inning. For the Falcons, DJ Newman began the game with a walk, but a double-play ball emptied the bases.
• The Rockets got a one-out infield hit, but Kyle Gurney threw out UT's Cadon Konczak attempting to steal second.
• Tyler Ross led off the second inning with a leadoff homer into the wind and over the left-field fence, giving the Falcons what proved to be the only run Newman and Connar Penrod would need. Adam Fallon had a two-out single later in the inning, but was stranded there.
• Nathan Archer doubled the Falcons' lead with another leadoff homer, this one in the fourth. Archer hit the first pitch of the inning over the fence in right to give BG a 2-0 advantage.
• In the fifth, Newman led off with a base hit, then took second on a sacrifice bunt by Sam Seidel. Newman would score easily when Gurney lined a ball to the wall in right-center for a one-out triple that ended the day for UT starter Jack Walker.
• Meanwhile, after UT put two on with one out in the third, Newman retired the last 17 Rockets he faced. He ended that third frame by getting a strikeout, then a lazy fly ball to left. Then, he retired the Blue and Gold in order in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, needing just six pitches to record three outs in the sixth.
• UT reliever Cal McAninch, who came on after the Gurney triple in the fifth, retired the first six hitters he faced before Newman reached on a one-out single in the seventh. Newman took second on a wild pitch, but was stranded there.
• In the home half of the seventh, Newman worked another one-two-three frame, striking out both Owen Jackson and Brian Fry to send the game to the eighth.
• And, in that eighth inning, the freshman again set the hosts down in order, with a fly ball, a strikeout and a grounder to the right side.
• Fallon began the ninth inning with a homer to right, giving the Orange and Brown a four-run lead.
• Penrod took the mound for the bottom of the ninth, and retired the first two batters he faced. The Falcons' streak of consecutive Rockets retired ended at 19 after a two-out infield error, but Penrod froze the next UT hitter for a game-ending strikeout.
• BGSU had a 10-2 lead in the hits department. Konczak and Williams had the game's only hits for the hosts.
