Falcons Set To Close Out 2023 Regular Season With Battle Of I-75

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team will close out the Battle of I-75 and the 2023 campaign this weekend with a three-game series in Toledo, beginning Thursday (May 18) with a 3 p.m. first pitch. The series will shift to Fifth Third Field, the home of the Toledo Mud Hens, on Friday (May 19) with a 7 p.m. start before concluding Saturday (May 20) at 2 p.m. Tickets for Friday night's game are currently on sale and can be purchased online at the link below. All seats are general admission and may be purchased for $10. Students are $8 when using the coupon code FALCONS.

At The Ballpark Friday
The BGSU Alumni Office will be hosting a pregame tailgate at Fifth Third Field. The cost, which includes a ticket to the game, is $30 for adults and $15 for children. If you already have purchased your ticket, the buffet is $20. The deadline to purchase is Thursday, May 18. Football tickets and BGSU merchandise will be sold inside the stadium on the first base side of the main concourse.
Scouting Toledo
The Rockets are coming off an extra innings midweek loss to Purdue Fort Wayne, falling to the Mastodons 8-7 in 10 innings on Tuesday (May 16). Toledo carried a 7-4 lead into the eighth inning. Purdue Fort Wayne tallied two in the eighth to close the gap to 7-6 before knotting it up in the ninth at seven. In extras, the Mastodons scored in the top of the 10th to take a late 8-7 lead for the win. Since the last meeting between BGSU and UT, the Rockets hold a record of 5-6. On the season, Toledo is 25-27 while being 13-14 within the Mid-American Conference.

The diamond edition of the Battle of I-75 marks one of the oldest traditions in BGSU athletics with the series dating back to the 1921 season. Over the history of the rivalry the teams have gone head-to-head 232 times. The all-time series leans the way of the Falcons with Bowling Green holding a record of 133-99 against the Rockets. Last season, the Falcons won three of the five games played between the teams, but Toledo took the first meeting this season back on April 26 with a 12-7 final score.

Last Time Out
Over the weekend, the Falcons hosted the Northern Illinois Huskies for the final home series of the season at Steller Field. BGSU took the series, winning the first two games of the three-game series. The bats were electric for the Falcons in the first game of the series, scoring a season-high 21 runs on a season-high 23 hits, including an 11-run third inning. As for Saturday, the Orange and Brown fell behind 3-0 early, but moved out in front with a four-run seventh inning. NIU forced extras, but a bases loaded hit by pitch by Tyler Ross walked it off for the Falcons. Adam Fallon won the MAC Player of the Week following the weekend where he reached base 10 times in 12 plate appearances, slashing .778/.883/1.667 for the weekend with a double, two triples, a home run, five runs scored and six RBI.

- As a pitching staff, the Falcons enter the weekend with 341 strikeouts as a team. BGSU needs 27 strikeouts as a team to tie the program record and 28 to break it for strikeouts in a single season.
- With 186 career strikeouts in the Orange and Brown, Gage Schenk is currently tied for fifth all-time in program history for the stat. He needs 198 to tie for fourth all-time.
- Over the weekend, Adam Fallon went 7-for-9 (.778) at the plate with six RBI, five runs scored, a double, two triples and a home run. Fallon is the first Falcon since 2013 to have two triples in the same game, tying the program record.
- Nathan Rose has logged 16 doubles this season for the Falcons, tying him for 10th all-time. One more double will move him into a tie for sixth all-time. Rose needs 19 to tie for the program record for doubles in a single season and 20 to break the record.
- Kyle Gurney is on record book watch for a few stats. He currently has 35 walks this season and needs 38 to enter the top 10 all-time. He also has 38 doubles as a Falcon and needs 41 to enter the record book for career doubles. Defensively, Gurney has 777 career putouts for the Falcons, currently ninth all-time. He needs 833 to tie for eighth.
- Tyler Ross has an eight-game on-base streak. During the span, Ross has 10 hits and six walks while adding seven RBI, five runs scored and two doubles.
- Sam Seidel also has an eight-game on-base for Bowling Green. Seidel has tallied eight hits and eight walks to go along with five runs scored, three RBI and two home runs.
- Jack Krause has put together a five-game hitting streak for the Falcons. During the streak, he's batting .429 (6-for-14) with seven RBI, two runs scored, two triples and a double.
- At the plate, DJ Newman has a five-game hitting streak and he's logged a hit in 12 of the last 13 games he's had an at-bat.
- Landon Willeman has registered four consecutive scoreless appearances out of the bullpen for BGSU. The streak stretches across six innings with seven strikeouts.
