Newman leads BGSU on the mound and at the plate
NILES, Ohio – Youngstown State University pitching held the Bowling Green State University baseball team to just four hits on Tuesday evening (May 9), as the Penguins posted a 5-1 win in non-league action at Eastwood Park.
YSU jumped on top with a pair of first-inning runs, and after the Falcons cut the deficit in half in the third, the Penguins tacked on single runs in three-straight innings from the fifth to the seventh.
DJ Newman made his second collegiate start on the mound, and allowed just two runs and four hits in four innings of work. He struck out five and did not walk a batter, throwing 42 of his 62 pitches for strikes.
At the plate, Newman singled, walked twice and scored the Falcons' lone run of the evening. BG batters drew six walks in the contest, with Newman and Tyler Ross each walking twice.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Penguins got on the scoreboard first, as Trey Law and Braeden O'Shaughnessy began the YSU first inning with back-to-back singles. A grounder to second produced the game's first run, with a sac fly giving the hosts a 2-0 lead.
• BGSU cut the deficit in half in the third inning. DJ Newman drew a one-out walk, his second free pass in as many plate appearances. With two outs and Newman at first base, YSU made a pitching change, and reliever Zach Stayduhar proceeded to walk Kyle Gurney before hitting Nathan Archer with a pitch. Then, Tyler Ross drew a base on balls to allow Newman to trot home.
• After allowing back-to-back hits to the first two batters he faced, Newman then retired the next seven Penguins. Law singled with one down in the YSU third, and a two-out hit put runners at the corners, but Newman got cleanup hitter Steven D'Eusanio to hit a fly ball to left for the third out.
• The Penguins added to the lead against Falcon reliever Isaiah Seidel in the fifth. Ian Francis led off the inning with a single and came home on Braeden O'Shaughnessy's two-out double to make it a 3-1 game. Nic Good came on and struck out Padraig O'Shaughnessy to end the inning.
• But, in the sixth, the hosts scored again, as a Turner Grau double was followed by a walk and an RBI single by Andre Good. Peyton Wilson entered the game and after issuing a walk, induced RJ Sherwood to ground into an inning-ending double play.
• And, YSU added a run in the seventh on a single, a walk, wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. Wilson struck out D'Eusanio, then got Grau to line out to Nathan Rose at third.
• Ross drew his second walk of the game in the eighth inning, and Gavin Ganun and Newman each singled in the ninth, but the Falcons were unable to cut into the YSU lead.
